Upgrading your CTP device can boost productivity and efficiency

Upgrading to a new CTP device is a quick and cost-effective way for a printer to become more productive and efficient, and ultimately more competitive. Many printers in the industry today are still using platesetters that they installed five or even ten years ago.
Why not, if they’re still working? However, even though their platesetters may still be imaging plates as well as they did when they were new, upgrading to a new platesetter can deliver big benefits.
Not only do new platesetters come with updated software, hardware and basic components, which reduce service and repair costs as well as the risk of failure at an inconvenient time, Kodak’s newer models offer significant power savings, additional speed and automation options. Upgrading is a smart business decision for printers that want to grow their business and reduce costs.
One exciting new option for KODAK ACHIEVE and TRENDSETTER Platesetters is the new Multi-Cassette Unit (MCU), which offers advanced automation for printers. Automation offers several benefits:
- Increased productivity. Printers can maximize speed to market without waiting on operator availability to load plates into the platesetter.
- Cost savings and efficiency. Printers can reduce staffing or reassign operators to other tasks, and there is less waste due to plate handling errors.
- Process control and stability. Plates sent to the pressroom are more consistent without the variability of manual plate handling.
The new MCU offers automated plate loading and unloading of up to 480 plates, so printers can run continuously for longer. Each cassette holds up to 120 plates of the same size and thickness with slip sheets, enabling up to four plate sizes online. The required cassette is automatically selected according to job definition. Printers can choose to have either two or four cassettes.
With a new ACHIEVE or TRENDSETTER Platesetter with MCU, printers can reduce energy costs through unique, power-saving technology. The current models of ACHIEVE or TRENDSETTER Platesetters with MCU use up to 80% less power than other MCU solutions. While imaging, the TRENDSETTER Platesetter uses only 770 watts, and the ACHIEVE Platesetter uses only 400 watts.
The MCU for ACHIEVE or TRENDSETTER Platesetters also uses less space than other MCU solutions – 24 to 65% less space. Its compact design is important for printers that want to improve productivity through automation but don’t have much extra physical space in prepress. The footprint of the platesetter with MCU is only 233 cm wide by 254 cm deep.
Finally, the MCU can be configured with a wide range of options. A short unload table is standard, but the MCU is also available with a long unload table with plate rotator. There is also an optional post-image punch system with up to 10 punch heads.
Other automation options are also available for KODAK ACHIEVE or TRENDSETTER Platesetters:
- Single-Cassette Unit (SCU) – lets printers load one cassette of up to 120 plates
- Autoload system –offers automated plate loading and unloading of up to 40 plates
- Auto Unload – offers semi-automatic loading plus automatic unloading into the plate processor or stacker.
ACHIEVE or TRENDSETTER Platesetters are also fully compatible with SONORA Process Free Plates. SONORA Plates completely remove the need for plate processing by going straight from the platesetter to the press, eliminating the cost and environmental impact of the chemistry, water, energy, and floorspace of plate processing.
