Using an External Flash with a KODAK EASYSHARE Zoom Digital Camera with External Flash Sync Connector

Updated October 2005

Introduction

Your zoom digital camera is equipped with built-in flash suitable for shooting any object within these ranges:

  • Wide: 0.6 - 4.9 m (2.0 - 16.1 ft) at ISO 140

  • Telephoto: 1.1 - 4.2 m (3.9 - 13.8 ft) at ISO 200

Since your camera is equipped with a built-in flash at a fixed position, you cannot change the flash angle. However, you can vary the lighting and improve flash pictures by using an external flash unit with your camera. This document explains how you can use almost any external flash unit with your camera.

Choosing an External Flash Unit

You can connect the camera to any standard portable or studio electronic flash unit that works with 35-mm or medium-format film cameras. Connect the flash unit to the camera using a standard sync-cord, supplied with many flash units or available where you purchased the flash unit.

Some flash units may require a sync-cord adapter to properly connect to your digital camera. Check with your photo supply retailer or the manufacturer of your flash unit. Kodak does not sell sync-cords or cord adapters.

External Flash Specifications

  • PC Connection: Positive Contact coaxial plug

  • Polarity: None

  • Maximum voltage: 500 V

Attaching the Flash Unit Bracket

To mount a portable (or grip-type) flash unit to the camera, attach a flash bracket using the tripod mount screw on the camera bottom. Most grip-type flash units are sold with brackets. For smaller, clip-on type flash units, check with your retailer or flash manufacturer for mounting bracket options.

We recommend that you use a voltage regulator to reduce the triggering voltage of the flash to 6 V to protect the camera circuitry.

Connecting the Camera and External Flash

To connect the camera and external flash, try a standard flash sync-cord. If your flash requires a special cord, you can purchase it at a photo supply store. The camera uses a standard PC connection.

Remember that the PC Sync on the camera is live and will fire the flash whether the camera flash is on or off.

To connect the flash:

CAUTION: Connecting the camera to the flash can create a power surge at the connection point, causing the flash to fire unexpectedly, or the flash may not synchronize at all. Use a voltage regulator to reduce the risk of damage to the camera circuitry.

  1. Turn off the camera and flash.

  2. Attach the sync-cord to the camera.

  3. Attach the sync-cord to the external flash unit(s) as shown.

  4. Turn on the camera and flash.

  5. Set the same aperture value on the external flash unit and the camera (or the correct settings for the flash you are using).

Setting the Camera

To prepare the camera for external flash:

  1. Set the desired color mode/quality mode.

  2. Select center-weighted or center-spot focus.

  3. Select the sharpness.

  4. Set the ISO to 80 or 100.

  5. Set the shutter speed.

Use 1/60 second unless you are using a tripod.

  6. Set the f/stop.

We recommend that you bracket the exposure for best results. Take several pictures with different f/stop settings. View the results on the LCD, and choose the ideal exposure for that subject.
