Infrared Connection
IrDA (Infrared Data Association) is a serial interface that moves
data with an infrared (invisible) light instead of a cable. IrDA-compliant
devices use both a transmitting mode and a receiving mode to acknowledge
receipt of information, generate responses, and detect the presence
of another IrDA device. If your computer is IrDA 1.0 compliant
or later (IrDA chip set, IrDA transceiver, and IrDA device drivers)
and you are running WINDOWS 95, you can connect the camera to your
computer using an infrared connection. WINDOWS NT does not support
an infrared connection. Both the DC220 camera and the DC260 camera
are IrDA 1.0-compliant devices and transfer data up to 115.2 Kb/per
second.
WINDOWS 95 creates two virtual ports for infrared devices: COM
1-9 for serial transfers and LPT 2-3 for printers. The exact virtual
port assigned is determined by other ports on your system. Some
systems may require that the serial COM port be disabled before
IrDA operates. You should check with your computer manufacturer
for the proper configuration for your system.
Determine if IrDA Port is Working
To determine if the IrDA port on your computer is working, do
the following:
-
Turn on the computer.
-
Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel.
-
In the Control Panel window, double-click the Infrared
icon and check that IrDA is active.
-
Turn on the camera and set the Mode dial to Capture.
-
Activate the LCD screen on the back of the camera by pressing
the camera Display button. Point the front lens of the camera directly
at the IrDA port on your computer and move the camera to within
a few inches of the IrDA port.
-
Observe the IrDA port using only the LCD on the back of
the camera for viewing. Approximately every three seconds, you should
see a bright series of flashes in the LCD, indicating that the port
is working.
-
If the port is not working, contact the computer manufacturer.
Set Up IrDA
These generic steps will assist you in setting up IrDA connectivity.
However, these steps may not match the instructions provided by
your computer manufacturer. In case of discrepancy, consult the
computer User's Guide or contact the manufacturer.
-
Determine if your computer is equipped
with a factory-installed IrDA port and internal or external transceiver.
-
Determine if IrDA support is turned on in the computer
BIOS. Refer to the computer User's Guide for instructions
on examining the BIOS setting or contact the computer manufacturer.
-
Restart the computer.
-
Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel.
-
Double-click the System icon in the Control Panel window.
(The system is identified in the System section, located in the
right-hand side of the window.)
If your system is identified as WINDOWS 95 4.00.950 or 4.00 950A
software, get the IrDA Software Patch from http://www.microsoft.com,
and then search for IrDA.
Before installing the patch, read and understand all the instructions
provided by Microsoft.
MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 4.00.950B or later, IrDA support is either
preloaded on your system or directly available on the original distribution
media.
Connect the Camera to the Computer
To connect the camera to the computer
-
Turn on the camera.
-
Set the Mode dial to Connect.
-
Position the camera infrared transceiver so it is facing
the computer infrared receiver. When the two infrared ports establish
contact, the computer beeps.
Note: If you do not have IrDA installed on your computer, contact
your computer manufacturer. There are several options available
to add IrDA capability to your system.
Error Communicating with the Camera
If your computer has an IrDA connection but communication cannot
be established, the IrDA drivers may not be installed properly.
For more information on installing the drivers, check the WINDOWS
User's Guide or call your local Microsoft dealer.
