KODAK Picture Easy Software 3.1: Problems and Solutions

Contents

These Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) were last updated on 23 January, 2002.

If you encounter a problem with Picture Easy Software, the first place to look for a solution is in section 6 of the software's User's Manual. (While you're there, be sure to say hello to Buddy and Boss from their friends in Tech Support!)

If that doesn't work, try the Readme file. And if that doesn't work, most everything we've learned since publishing those documents appears here.

Installing Picture Easy Software 3.1

  1. General installation problems.
Installation problems may occur if other programs are running when you install Picture Easy Software. Please be sure to terminate all other programs before installing Picture Easy Software. To do this,
    1. Close all programs that are open on the taskbar (usually located at the bottom of the screen), and
    2. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to access Task Manager and close everything but Explorer.

  2. "Can't find ltkrn80n.dll" Error.
If you receive the above error, do the following:
    1. Uninstall Picture Easy 3.1 by going to either of the following locations on your computer:
      • Start>Programs>Kodak>Picture Easy Software>Picture Easy 3.1 Utilities>Uninstall Picture Easy 3.1.
      • Start>Settings>Control Panels>Add/Remove Programs. Click the Install/Uninstall tab. Select Picture Easy 3.1 in the list of programs. Click Add/Remove and then click Yes.
    2. Reboot your computer when Picture Easy has been uninstalled.
    3. Reinstall Picture Easy 3.1.

Reminder: If you used an earlier version of Picture Easy Software to put pictures into albums or the top drawer and you want to access them directly using Version 3.1, you will need to move the pictures to these new locations:
C:\ Program Files \ Kodak \ Picture Easy Software \ Albums
C:\ Program Files \ Kodak \ Picture Easy Software \ Top Drawer

  3. "AFX_IDS Title" Error.
If you receive this error when you try to launch Picture Easy and the titles of the selections on the Main Menu page have "IDS_" in front of the titles, for example, IDS_No KODAK Camera Selected," you will need to overwrite the "dao350.dll" file with a new one as follows:

Step 1: Obtain a new "dao350.dll" file in one of the following ways:

    • By e-mail attachment: Go to the Picture Easy Software Support Web site at the URL address http://www.kodak.com/go/pictureeasysupport or call 1-800-CD-KODAK (1-800-235-6325), report your problem, and request the correct "dao350.dll" file. One of our tech support representatives will e-mail the file to you as an attachment. When the e-mail arrives, take the appropriate steps to detach the "dao350.dll" file to the hard drive (usually the C:\ drive).
    • By traditional mail on diskette: Call our tech support at 1-800-CD-KODAK (1-800-235-6325), report your problem, and ask the tech support representative to send the correct "dao350.dll" file to you on a diskette.
    • From another system: Copy the "dao350.dll" file to a diskette from another system on which Picture Easy is working properly. The file is located on the hard drive (usually the C: drive) at C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared \ Dao.

Step 2: Create a new folder on the your hard drive, which we are assuming to be the C: drive, and name it "Daoold," or something similar, as follows:

    1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
    2. Single-click [C:].
    3. Under the "File" menu, single-click "Open."
    4. In the next window, under the "File" menu, single-click "New" then "Folder."
    5. When the "New Folder" appears, type "Daoold" or something similar.

Step 3: Copy the old "dao350.dll" file from C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared \ Dao to the C: \ Daoold as follows:

    1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
    2. Navigate to C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared \ Dao.
    3. Single-click on the "dao350.dll" file to select it.
    4. Under the "Edit" menu, click "Copy."
    5. Navigate back to [C:] and single-click on the "Daoold" folder to select it.
    6. Under the "Edit" menu, click "Paste."
    7. Close all open windows, returning to the desktop.

Step 4: Copy the new "dao350.dll" file, which you received from us (either via e-mail or on diskette) or that you obtained from another system, to C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared \ Dao as follows:

    1. Single-click on the new "dao350.dll" file.
    2. Under the "Edit" menu, click "Copy."
    3. Navigate to C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared, and single-click on the "Dao" folder to select it.
    4. Under the "Edit" menu, click "Paste."
    5. When asked if you want to overwrite the existing file of the same name, click "Yes."

Step 5: Reboot your computer and relaunch Picture Easy.

Communicating With KODAK Digital Cameras and Scanners

  1. Troubleshooting camera connection problems.
Sometimes, even though you have connected your camera, or any new device, to a COM port on your personal computer, the two pieces of hardware may not communicate properly with each other. The reasons for this are many and often relate to the specific configuration of the computer to which you are connecting the camera. If you have a communication problem, you might:
    • Receive an error message after clicking an icon to get pictures from the camera,
    • Be unable to get some or all of the full-size pictures from the camera despite successfully viewing the thumbnails, or
    • Receive an error message after you have begun to transfer pictures from the camera to the computer.

Following are several things to try when resolving a communication problem.

    1. Review the user's manual for the camera you are trying to connect. All of the manuals for KODAK Cameras contain important information about connecting the particular camera and can often pinpoint the source of the problem. The user's guide for Picture Easy Software also contains some troubleshooting tips, though they are more general than the ones in the specific camera manual.
    2. If the computer is not communicating with the camera at all (especially if it has in the past), check batteries and connections to be sure everything is connected and the camera is powered on and staying on.
    3. If you are having trouble communicating with the camera using the Camera icon from Picture Easy Software, try using the TWAIN connection instead. Conversely, if the TWAIN interface is not working, try the Camera icon. The two methods of communicating use different underlying software, and under some circumstances, one may work when the other does not.
    4. If you are using a KODAK DC210 Zoom Digital Camera, be sure to review the Readme file (available through Start > Kodak Digital Science > DC210 Zoom Camera > DC210Readme) and be sure the round switch on the back of the camera points to "Connect."
    5. If you are able to see thumbnail pictures but cannot transfer some or all of the larger pictures, try adjusting the baud rate of the COM port from 115,200 to each lower increment until the transfer succeeds. This is occasionally necessary when the COM port hardware does not transfer data reliably for long enough to transfer the whole picture.
    6. Finally, check http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/digitalCameraTechInfo.shtml for a great guide to understanding COM ports and troubleshooting camera connections.

  2. KODAK DC265 Digital Camera: COM Ports are grayed out.
This condition can occur in Picture Easy when you select the DC265 Camera in order to bring in pictures, and the dialog box "Camera Communication Error" appears. However, you cannot locate the camera because the drop-down menus for both COM Ports and Baud Rate are grayed out. To correct the problem, you must delete the file KCOMDC265.pref, which has become corrupted. Follow these instrcutions to delete the file from your computer.
    1. Exit Picture Easy.
    2. Under the Start button on your computer, click Find then Files or Folders. The "Find" dialog box appears.
    3. In the field next to "Named", type in KCOMDC265.pref.
    4. In the field next to "Look in", select (C:) from the drop-down menu.
    5. Click the button "Find Now". A result list appears at the bottom of the "Find" dialog box.
    6. Single click on KCOMDC265.pref to highlight it.
    7. Hit the delete key on the keyboard, deleting the file KCOMDC265.pref.
    8. Close the "Find" utility.
    9. Relaunch Picture Easy Software.

Relaunching Picture Easy installs a new KCOMDC265.pref file. You should now be able to communicate with the DC265 Camera.

Managing Your Pictures (Importing, Viewing, Storing, E-mailing)

  1. Saving pictures in a format other than FPX file format.
It is possible to save your pictures in any of the following formats: FPX, JPEG, TIFF, or BMP.
    1. Open Picture Easy Software.
    2. Locate and select the pictures you want to save.
      • Click a single picture to select it.
      • Hold down the Ctrl key and click more than one picture to select them.
      • Click "Select All" icon at the bottom of the screen to select all of the pictures.
    3. Click the "Save" icon on the left side of the screen.
    4. Click the icon "Save pictures elsewhere on your computer" near the top of the "Save Pictures" screen.

      [Save Pictures]

    5. A list of the directories on your system appears. Select the folder for your saved picture(s).
    6. Choose the desired file format from the drop-down menu next to "Save as type."

      [Save as type]

    7. Click "Save."

    2. Go to a drive, directory, and folder where your pictures are located.
    3. Left click on a JPG file to select it.
    4. Hold down Ctrl-Shift while you right click the same JPG file. A pop-up menu appears.
    5. Select "Open With..."
    6. Follow the instructions on the screen, and be sure to check the box at the bottom, "Always use this program to open this type of file."
    7. Click "OK."

  3. E-mailing pictures
    Method One:

The first time you want to e-mail a picture, you will need to adjust certain e-mail settings as follows:

    1. In Picture Easy, single-click the thumbnail(s) of the picture(s) that you want to e-mail, then single-click the "E-mail" icon on the left side of the window.
    2. When the picture and message box appear, click the "Tools" icon at the bottom of the window to access the "Modify E-mail Setup" window.
    3. From the dropdown menu under "Please select your e-mail service," choose "Other Mail System."
    4. Type in the information requested for the white fields (for example, your e-mail address) and browse for the information for the gray fields (for example, the executable for your e-mail application).
"Launch E-mail Application" is a default choice, which you may deselect by clicking inside the white check-box.
    5. Click "OK."

Once you make these settings, it's easy to e-mail picture(s) anytime you want to by following these simple steps.

    1. Single-click the thumbnail(s) of the picture(s) that you want to e-mail.
    2. Single-click the "E-mail" icon on the left side of the window.
    3. Click "Accept."
Picture Easy creates a default directory in the location that you specified in the "Modify E-mail Setup" window and assigns a number--a rather long number--to it. Picture Easy saves your picture(s) in this directory.
    4. When the "Send Complete" window appears, make note of the location and number of the directory and click "OK."
Picture Easy launches your e-mail application (unless you deselected this choice in the "Modify E-mail Setup" window in step 4 above).
    5. In your e-mail application, create and address your e-mail as usual.
    6. Follow the instructions of your e-mail application for creating an attachment. When prompted, locate the default directory (the one with the long number), open it, and attach your picture(s) to the e-mail.
    7. Complete and send the e-mail as usual.

    Method Two:

You may also follow these instructions for e-mailing your pictures.

    1. In Picture Easy, single-click the thumbnail(s) of the picture(s) that you want to e-mail then single-click the "Save" icon on the left side of the window.
    2. Pick a location on your hard drive and save your picture(s).
    3. In your e-mail application, create and address your e-mail as usual.
    4. Follow the instructions of your e-mail application for creating an attachment. When prompted, locate and attach the picture(s) to the e-mail.
    5. Send the e-mail.

  2. Memory, resources, and printing.
When a program sends a picture to a printer, the program actually sends it to another program (the printer driver) which then sends it to the printer. Since pictures often require a lot of memory (a single high resolution picture taken with a DC210 Zoom Digital Camera requires about 3 Megabytes) and since programs usually send everything to the printer driver all at once, printing can require a lot of memory to run correctly, especially if you are printing a lot of high resolution pictures at the same time. In turn, most printer drivers use hard-drive space to supplement memory, using both of those resources to "spool" the print job.

Memory-resource problems during printing can display many different symptoms, including:

    • Error messages related to memory from the printer driver,
    • Program or driver crashed during printing.
    • Prints that appear very different from your expectations (for example, four full-page prints appear as a "strip of negatives" on a single page), and
    • Much longer printing time than expected (for example, an hour instead of a few minutes).

Here are some things to think about when printing with Picture Easy Software (and many other programs).

    1. Check your printer's user's manual for hints and tips about memory use; the printer driver is usually where memory problems occur and the best place to learn about the printer driver is in the printer's manual (or at the printer manufacturer's Web site). Also, be sure you are using the latest printer driver; drivers are updated frequently, and the manufacturer's Web site is often the best place to find the latest drivers.
    2. If your printer driver lets you allocate more memory to printing, allocate as much memory as possible.
    3. The more pictures you are trying to print at the same time, the greater the demand on memory. If problems appear, try to print fewer pictures at a time if possible.
    4. If the hard drive on which WINDOWS resides (often the C: drive) has 150 MB or less of free space, you may encounter a problem if you print more than a few pictures, especially at the highest print-quality settings. If you experience any of the problems described above, try to free up space by deleting unnecessary files; it may also be necessary to run Scandisk, and then defragment your hard drive (don't forget to back up your files first!) for maximum benefit. (If you are not sure how to perform any of the tasks indicated, consult your computer's User's Guide or the manufacturer for instructions.)
    5. If you are printing pictures from a PHOTO CD Disc, be sure to open the PHOTO CD image at the lowest resolution that meets your needs. For example, for an 8 x 10 or 11 x 14 print, open the image at 16Base resolution (the highest possible PCD resolution), but for a 5 x 7 print, open the image at the lower 4Base resolution.
Note: To set the resolution at which you want to open the image, click the preferences icon in the lower right corner of the Picture Easy Software window.
    6. If you are having problems that you think are related to memory, and if changes to memory demands cause the symptoms to change, then memory is probably at the root of the problem. For example, if an error message appears when making five prints, and it doesn't appear when making just one, memory is probably the cause of the problem.

  3. Print is "pixelated."
If your print is "pixelated," which means that the square-edged pixels are visible, then the picture does not have a high enough resolution (pixels-per-printed inch) for the print size you have selected. You can resolve this problem in only one of the following two ways:
    1. Print smaller (for example, reduce from one-per-page to two-per-page), or
    2. Provide a higher resolution image (for example, by zooming out if possible or by rescanning at a higher resolution or by opening a PHOTO CD image at higher resolution).

Exiting and Uninstalling Picture Easy Software 3.1

  1. Uninstalling Picture Easy Software 3.1.
Run the uninstall program for Picture Easy 3.1 located at Start > Programs > Kodak > Picture Easy > uninstall. This operation removes the Picture Easy 3.1 program itself but not the albums' directories so that any stored pictures are not lost. If you do not wish to keep those directories or their contents after uninstalling the software, you can find the directories at:
    • C:\Program Files\Kodak\Picture Easy Software\Top Drawer
    • C:\Program Files\Kodak\Picture Easy Software\Albums

(if you installed Picture Easy at its default location) and remove them using WINDOWS Explorer.

  2. Error message about the recycle bin followed by a crash on exit.
If you installed Picture Easy 3.1 after version 2.03 or 2.04 of KODAK Picture Postcard Software, you will receive a message about emptying the recycle bin every time you exit Picture Easy. Regardless of how you answer this message (which is usually erroneous), your choice will be followed by a harmless but annoying crash of the Picture Easy Software program. If you wish to eliminate this problem, do the following:
    1. Uninstall Picture Easy Software using the uninstall program that appears in the WINDOWS Start menu. (Your stored pictures will not be lost.)
    2. Uninstall Picture Postcard Software using the uninstall program that appears in the WINDOWS Start menu. (Your stored Postcards will not be lost.)
    3. Reinstall Picture Easy Software 3.0 from the installation CD.
    4. Reinstall Picture Postcard Software from the Web site by going to the URL http://www.kodak.com/go/postcard and clicking on Download Software.

Upgrading from Picture Easy Software Version 2.0/3.0/3.02 to Version 3.1

To successfully upgrade to version 3.1 of Picture Easy Software, do the following:
Purchase Picture Easy 3.1 Insert the installation disc into your computer's CD-ROM drive, and follow the installation instructions. The new version detects the previous version and uses the current locations of your picture albums and top drawer so that you can begin to use your pictures immediately in the new version.
