Contents

Updated 29 September 1999

Introduction

Use this document to troubleshoot problems encountered with the operation of the KODAK ADVANTIX Film Drive FD 300.

This documentation assumes that you are using the KODAK ADVANTIX Film Drive with a WINDOWS 98 System that meets the specifications outlined for the use of the film drive.

We are sorry if you are experiencing a problem with your film drive and we want to assist you in every way possible to get you back to scanning and having fun quickly. Before calling Kodak for help, please attempt to resolve the problem using the KODAK ADVANTIX Troubleshooter Software, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) located here and in your User's Guide (on the ADVANTIX Film Drive CD).

What should I do before I call?

  1. Disconnect any printer or other device connected to the film drive's pass-through port. Refer to the question about "How do I resolve communication and printer conflicts" in the Communication / Printers / Parallel Port Issues section in these FAQs.
  2. Refer to the Known Conflicts question in the Communication / Printers / Parallel Port Issues section of these FAQs.
  3. Uninstall and then reinstall the ADVANTIX Software. Refer to the Installation section of these FAQs for assistance.
  4. Remove all film from the film drive and run all of the Troubleshooter tests in the KODAK ADVANTIX Troubleshooter Software window. From the Start menu, choose Programs > KODAK ADVANTIX > FD 300 > Troubleshooter Software. Click on Test All . If a Test fails, you will need the information presented in the Detail window(s) when you contact us. Refer to the requested information listed in the Technical Support section of these FAQs.
  5. Review the FAQs from the Kodak Web site and in your User's Guide. The FAQs on the Web site contain information about the film drive that we have discovered since the film drive was released. The Web site also contains the latest film drive drivers and updates.

Error Codes

What do the error codes mean?

Error Code Description What to Do
0, 1, 2 Connectivity Problems The film drive works best with IRQ 7 and an Input / Output Range (port address) that starts with 0378. On some systems, the film drive will not work if an IRQ is not assigned to the parallel port, or if the port address is something other than 0378h (such as 0278h or 03BCh).

If you have more than one parallel port on your system, it is advisable to move the film drive to the LPT1 parallel port.

To check and see what your current parallel settings are, perform the following:

  1. Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the System icon.
  3. Choose the Device Manager tab.
  4. Scroll down to the Ports (COM & LPT) icon and click on the plus (+) sign left of the icon, making it a minus (-).
  5. Go to the "Printer Port (LPT1)" or "ECP Printer Port (LPT1)" icon and double-click it.
  6. If the device status shows a conflict, resolve this issue by contacting your PC vendor or manufacturer.
  7. Select the Resource tab to view the current resource settings.
If no Interrupt Request (IRQ) is shown, consult your PC vendor or manufacturer to make this IRQ 07 and Input/Output 0378h.
If the port address is not 0378, consult your PC vendor or manufacturer to make the change.
  8. Check to see if there is a conflict with the sound card setting. See the question "Why do I get the error 'Cannot find the film drive,'" following in this document.
3 Thrust Spool Not Turning Run the Troubleshooter Software without film.

Remember to remove the film cassette from the film drive and reset the film drive using the Troubleshooter Software. Retry the Troubleshooter Software. If the error occurs again:

  1. Make sure that the film drive is the only item on LPT1. Check for all printer drivers installed on the system. To do this, go to Start > Settings > Printers. An icon will display for each printer installed.
  2. Press and hold the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys, and then select End Task for all programs running with the exception of EXPLORER and Systray.
  3. Rerun Troubleshooter Software. If the error occurs again, your film drive may need repair. In the US call 1-800-235-6325. Elsewhere, call the number listed for your region from the table at the end of this document.
4 Nip Roller Not Turning
12 Frame Perf Sensor is Bad
13 Turn-Around Sensor is Bad
30 Perf Sensor Failed During Calibration
23 - 38, 41 - 55 Hardware Errors Remove the film cassette from the film drive and reset the film drive using the Troubleshooter Software. Retry. If the error occurs again, it indicates a film drive hardware error. Please contact your local Kodak Technical Support for return information and authorization so that you can send the film drive in for repair.
39 and 40 These errors indicate that the film cassette may not be processed yet. If you are certain that the film has been processed, make sure that the IPI indicator on the film cassette is thoroughly pressed.

Try a different film cassette.

A processed film cassette that consistently fails indicates that the film leader is fogged and therefore unusable in the film drive.

50 Bad Perf Sensor Calibration Run the Troubleshooter Software without film

This error usually occurs because of a bad film cassette, or film is stuck in the film drive.

Reset the film drive and try again.

If the error occurs with no film cassette installed or with every cassette installed, return the film drive for service.

Error Messages

  1. DMA Transfer Error
Refer to the section Communication / Printers / Parallel Port Issues "What computer resource should the Parallel Port be set to in order to work with the film drive?"

  2. Why do I get the error "Cannot find the film drive?"
On GATEWAY, COMPAQ and HP PAVILION Computers and others, we have seen conflicts with ENSONIQ and CREATIVE LABS Sound Card settings where problems are caused by the sound cards sharing the LPT port IRQ. To determine which sound card your computer has and to correct the conflict, follow the procedure below.
    1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Choose the Device Manager tab.
    4. Scroll down to Sound, Video, and Game controllers and double-click the icon.
    5. Double-click the sound card icon.
Note: There can be more than one sound card entry. If there is, you may have to open the other entry to get to the necessary option.
    6. From the sound card Property window, choose the "Setting" or "Options" tab. If your sound card does not have a Setting or Options tab, then your sound card does not have LPT Interrupt sharing.
    7. Disable the option that states "Allow LPT Interrupt Sharing."
    8. Exit from the System Property window.
    9. Re-start the computer. The film drive should work properly now.

On some systems this procedure will cause the computer to shut down, or the change to the "Allow LPT Interrupt sharing will not hold. ENSONIQ is aware of the problem and a new sound card driver is available on the ENSONIQ Web site.

Contact ENSONIQ Tech Support - at http://www.ensoniq.com.

  3. What does the error message "unknown response" mean?
This error usually occurs because the film drive is not getting electrical power. Verify that the green Power-on LED on the front of the film drive is lit. If it is not lit, check all the power cord connections from the film drive to the wall receptacle. In addition, please check the pins on the AC supply connected to the back of the film drive. If any of the pins are bent, contact technical support. The numbers are listed in a table at the end of this document.

  4. When I try to start the ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN), I get the error message "unable to open TWAIN source"?
The source of the problem is likely to be the parallel port setting. First, reboot your system, especially if you have experienced other systems errors. Then, refer to the "Communication / Printers / Parallel Port Issues" section of these FAQs. Or, your monitor may be in 16-color mode. Make sure the monitor is set to High Color (16-bit) mode. Note the difference between 16-color and 16-bit color. Refer to the previous question for instructions on how to check and change these settings.

Communication / Printers / Parallel Port Issues

  1. What causes communication errors, and what should I do about them?
Your computer displays a communication error whenever it has trouble communicating with the film drive. If the film drive has a hardware error, it gives the computer a "not ready" signal, and they cannot communicate. When you see a communication error, use the KODAK ADVANTIX Troubleshooter Software without film in the film drive to determine whether it is a computer resource problem or a hardware problem. If the Troubleshooter Software displays an error code of 0, 1, or 2, it usually indicates a computer resource problem.

Note: Sometimes after an error occurs, the film won't rewind and the film drive appears to lock up. If this happens, either use the Troubleshooting Software and Reset the film drive, or unplug and reconnect the film drive power cord.

  2. What computer resource should the Parallel Port be set to in order to work with the film drive?
The film drive works best with IRQ 7 and an Input / Output Range (port address) that starts with 0378. On some systems, the film drive won't work if an IRQ is not assigned to the parallel port, or if the port address is something other than 0378h (such as 0278h or 03BCh).

If you have more than one parallel port on your system, it is advisable to move the film drive to the LPT1 parallel port.

To check and see what your current parallel settings are, perform the following:

    1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Choose the Device Manager tab.
    4. Scroll down to the Ports (COM & LPT) icon and click on the plus (+) sign left of the icon, making it a minus (-).
    5. Go to the "Printer Port (LPT1)" or "ECP Printer Port (LPT1)" icon and double-click the icon.
    6. If the device status is showing a conflict, resolve this issue by contacting your PC vendor or manufacturer.
    7. Select the Resource tab
    8. This tab shows you the current resource settings. If no Interrupt Request (IRQ) is shown, consult your PC vendor or manufacturer to make this IRQ 07 and Input/Output 0378h.
    9. If the port address is not 0378, consult your PC vendor or manufacturer to make the change.
    10. Check to see if there is a conflict with the sound card setting. See the question "Why do I get the error 'Cannot find the film drive,'" following in this document.

  3. How do I change my parallel port mode?
The parallel port setting can affect the communication between the film drive and the computer. You should not make changes to your parallel port mode unless all other options to solve communication issues have been exhausted. (You can safely get a general idea of what your port setting is by accessing the Device Manager and checking the Ports setting. If the parallel port mode setting is 'Printer Port (LPT1),' then your parallel port is set to something other than ECP mode, the recommended setting for most desktops.)

To actually determine and change parallel port mode settings requires you to access your system BIOS/CMOS settings, and we strongly recommend that you have computer expertise before doing so. An incorrect change here could render your system inoperable. Please consult your computer vendor or manufacturer for assistance. For the majority of the desktop computers, the parallel port mode of ECP is the recommended setting. On laptop computers, the Bi-directional mode seems to work the best. The most typical settings are Standard, Bi-directional, SPP, EPP, EPP/SPP, ECP, EPP/ECP. If one setting doesn't work, try another selection.

  4. What does it mean when my images show on the screen as gray boxes?
When you see gray thumbnails on the screen instead of images, and your film drive has passed all of the tests from the Troubleshooter Software, it usually indicates a computer resource problem. With this error the film rewinds and a communication error shows up on the screen.

  5. Why doesn't my computer startup if the film drive is attached?
We have seen this occur with several different computers running WINDOWS 98 Software but not all WINDOWS 98 Systems exhibit the problem; as yet, we have no solution.

We have seen two different scenarios:

    Situation Workaround
The computer is booted up with the film drive attached before the film drive software is installed and the computer will not finish the boot-up process. Detach the film drive, successfully boot up the computer and then install the film drive software. When the computer is booted up in the future with the film drive attached, it boots successfully.
After the film drive software is installed, the computer still won't boot up when the film drive is attached. Detach the film drive from the computer until the system is completely booted up, then attach the film drive. Or, install a Premium AB switch on the computer's parallel port, and attach the film drive to the AB switch.

    Other Variables:

Your WINDOWS 98 installation should be a clean installation or upgrade. However, problems can arise that cause conflicts with the system files. When you upgrade, make sure that you:

    • close all applications
    • run Scan Disk and Disk Defragmenter on the system
    • make sure all peripheral devices and internal devices have WINDOWS 98 drivers installed*

WINDOWS 98 should run smoothly if you follow these guidelines.

    * Some devices will work with WINDOWS 95 drivers, but they might not show full functionality.

  6. How do I know if the film drive has a conflict with another device?
If you experience scanning or printing problems, use the following procedure to determine if your printer and the film drive have a conflict.

    Film Drive Communication Problems

    1. Disconnect the printer (or any other device) connected to the film drive's pass-through port.
    2. Run the Troubleshooter test. If everything tests properly and you can scan successfully, there is a conflict between your printer and the film drive.

    Possible Corrective Actions:

    • Consult the printer manufacturer.
    • Get a premium A/B switch box.
    • Install a second parallel port card in your computer for the other device.

  7. The film drive is working great, but I'm having problems printing. What should I do?
    1. Connect the printer directly to the PC parallel port and a print job.
    2. If the printer functions properly now, the problem could be one of the following:
      1. The printer is not compatible with the film drive's pass-through port.
        or
      2. The film drive's pass-through port is defective.
NOTE: Remember that the film drive has to be ON (plugged into an electrical outlet) in order for the pass-through port to function.
    3. Possible Corrective Actions:
      • Exchange or repair the film drive.
      • Install a second parallel port card in your PC.
      • Get a premium A/B switch box.

If the printer still does not work, consult the printer manufacturer.

  8. What printers have you tested with the ADVANTIX film drive?
We have tested the ADVANTIX film drive with the most popular printers on the market today. However, because there are so many printers available, we have not tested the film drive with every model. The following printers have been tested:

HP 870, HP LASERJET 5, HP 660, LEXMARK 2050, LEXMARK 2070, LEXMARK 1020, CANON BJC 210, CANON 610, CANON 4100, EPSON 500, NEC, OKIDATA, and EPSON STYLUS Color 2.

  9. What are the known conflicts with these printers?
Through our testing process we have discovered that the TOSHIBA Satellite Pro Laptop Computer, Models 460 CDT/ conflicts with the film drive's ability to share the PC's parallel port, including any parallel port backup drives such as HP or SYQUEST. We have also provided the following possible remedies:

When trying to scan using the film drive, the software returns an "unable to communicate" error message. If you run the Troubleshooter Software it will fail the Check Communication test with the following error, "Unexpected error code = 2".

The film drive does not communicate with the Satellite Pro if the laptop's parallel port is set to the ECP mode. Follow this procedure to verify and change the parallel port mode.

    1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel from the WINDOWS 95 Task Bar.
    2. Double-click the TOSHIBA System icon.
    3. o to the Miscellaneous Tab and select Standard Bi-Directional for the Parallel Port Mode.
    4. Reboot your computer.
NOTE: This procedure will be different on other versions of Toshiba Laptops.

  10. I'm using the STEALTH Diamond 3D 2000 Video Card and I see horizontal lines on my image. Why?
An earlier version of the driver shipped with some computers causes 2 to 3 horizontal lines to appear in a full view of an image when the image is viewed horizontally. If the image is rotated 90 degrees, the lines disappear. Version 4.03.02.0001 of the STEALTH 3D Display Driver causes this problem.

To correct this, download the latest 3D video driver from the Matrox Web site: http://www.matrox.com/mqaweb/drivers/ftp_w95.htm. The current video driver that functioned properly at release of this FAQ was Ver. 4.10.01.0069.

  11. Can I use a printer with built-in FAX capabilities with the film drive?
Printers with FAX capabilities cannot be connected to the film drive's Parallel Pass-through port. These types of printers are not IEEE 1284.3 compliant.

  12. What is the conflict with EPSON STYLUS Color 400, 500, 600 and 1500 Printers?
We have seen several problems that indicate the ADVANTIX Film Drive has a conflict with the EPSON STYLUS Color Printers. When attached to the film drive's parallel pass-through port, the printer's monitor display indicates an invalid status (does not print). The failure with the EPSON Printers appears to be with Epson's 16-bit printer drivers.

Follow these suggestions to use the film drive and EPSON Printers on the same computer.

    • Disable the EPSON Status Monitor. To do this, select the Options tab in the EPSON Spool Manager and enable spooling though the default WINDOWS 95 spooler.

    or

    • Install a second parallel port card in the PC.
      or
    • Use a Premium A/B switch box.
      or
    • Attach only one of the devices to the parallel port at a time.

To remove the KODAK ADVANTIX Software from your system, select Start > Programs > KODAK ADVANTIX > FD 300 > Uninstall KODAK ADVANTIX Film Drive software. This will remove the KODAK ADVANTIX (TWAIN), KODAK Launcher, and KODAK ADVANTIX Troubleshooter Software. To remove the Picture Easy Software, refer to the KODAK Picture Easy Software section.

Software Issues

  1. My film drive unexpectedly rewound the film and the software no longer works.
If the film drive detected a situation where it needed to do an emergency rewind, then you must exit the ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) and reopen it to continue working. You may also have to run the KODAK ADVANTIX Troubleshooter Software and reset the film drive.

  2. The ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) and KODAK Launcher Software windows do not display correctly. The windows are either too large for the monitor screen or the windows look blotchy. Why?
The ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) and KODAK Launcher Software windows installed by the Version 1.0 Software CD do not display properly if your monitor display setting is not set to 16-bit color (or greater) and 800 x 600 pixels. If you have the desktop area set at 640 x 480 pixels, these windows are too large for the monitor screen and require you to move the windows by clicking and holding the left mouse button on the WINDOWS Blue title bar. The windows will look blotchy if the display palette is set to 256 colors.

These settings are limited by your video display and VRAM (Video RAM). To check or change your settings, use the following procedure:

    1. Choose "Control Panel" from the Start > Settings menu.
    2. Double-click "Display" in the Control Panel directory.
    3. Click the "Settings" tab.
    4. Record the Color Palette and Desktop Area settings.
    5. Make any desired changes and select "Apply" and follow screen instructions.

Note: If you made changes and your monitor screen is out-of-sync after re-booting, bootup in Safe-mode and return the settings to their original values. To boot your computer in Safe-mode, press the Ctrl and Esc keys at the same time, then the "U" key, then the "R" key. Your computer will then shut down and begin to reboot. When "Starting WINDOWS 95" appears on the monitor, press the "F5" key.

You can also contact us in the US at 1-800-235-6325 for the Version 1.1 Software CD. Check the table at the end of the document for the technical assistance number for your region.

  3. The ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) windows are so large on my screen that I can't exit from the application.
The ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) window doesn't fit properly on the monitor screen because you have the desktop area set to 640 x 480 pixels. To exit from the ADVANTIX Access Software windows, simply press Alt and X at the same time.

  4. Why won't the KODAK Picture Easy 3.0 Software install on my computer?
Picture Easy 3.0 requires your computer to have a PENTIUM Processor chip that operates at 90 MHz or greater. You can usually tell what type of processor you have by the model name. Example: P166, the P stands for PENTIUM and the 166 is the MHz.

  5. Why can't I scan more than one image into ADOBE PHOTODELUXE Software?
Actually, you can scan more than one image into PHOTODELUXE Software. The reason you are having a problem is because a PHOTODELUXE Preference setting is not set correctly. From ADOBE PHOTODELUXE Software, select File > Preferences > Allow Multiple Document Windows.

  6. Why do I get a "PHOTODELUXE has a file access error" when I try to access the film drive from PHOTODELUXE Software?
This is a known problem with ADOBE PHOTODELUXE Software. You can find the solution at the following Adobe Web site: http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/SOLUTIONS/bec6.htm. PHOTODELUXE 2.0 Software uses STORM EASYPHOTO application to manage scanning and to store files in image galleries (e.g., the My Photos gallery). When gallery files of PHOTODELUXE Software are damaged, or when PHOTODELUXE Software or its EASY PHOTO application is damaged, PHOTODELUXE Software can return a "... file access problem" error. You can determine whether damaged gallery files are the cause by moving the Gallery folder to the desktop and restarting PHOTODELUXE Software.
    • If the error does not recur, damaged gallery files are the source of the problem.
    • If the error does recur, a damaged or incorrectly installed PHOTODELUXE Software or the EASYPHOTO application is the cause.

Therefore, do one or more of the following:

Move the galleries to see if they are damaged:

    1. In WINDOWS Explorer, move the contents of the C:\Program Files\PHOTODELUXE2.0\Ezphoto\Gallery folder to the Desktop.
    2. Restart PHOTODELUXE Software, then try to recreate the error. If the error does not occur, the gallery files are damaged.
      • If you don't want to use the My Photos gallery or any custom gallery you made, delete the gallery files.
      • If you want to use the My Photos gallery, go to step 3. (You'll need to re-create any custom galleries you made.)
    3. Un-install PHOTODELUXE Software.
      • Make sure the C:\Program Files\PHOTODELUXE 2.0 folder was removed
      • Re-install PHOTODELUXE Software in Safe Mode.

For instructions about removing and re-installing PHOTODELUXE Software, see document 872004 on the Adobe Web site.

NOTE: Move any personal files (e.g., scanned images) from the PHOTODELUXE 2.0 \EZPhoto\Photo folder before removing PHOTODELUXE Software.

  7. Why can't I scan an image directly into ADOBE PAGEMILL Software?
You cannot scan an image directly into PAGEMILL Software because it does not accept file transfer. Rather, it must operate on an existing file. Scan and transfer the image using ADOBE PHOTODELUXE Software. From the PHOTODELUXE application, select Send > To Interent > PageMill.

General Information

  1. My pictures don't look right on the monitor. Why?
This probably has to do with the kind of monitor you have, as it could be a 256, 16-bit, or 24-bit color monitor. Al[shy ]though the human eye can distinguish between 12 and 13 million colors and typical photos contain information equal to millions of colors, computer monitors are usually capable of displaying either 256 colors, thousands or millions of colors. In the past, many color video monitors for PC home computers were sold with just 256-color capability. However, most of today's PCs for the home come with far more video memory (VRAM) installed on the video card inside the computer. In most cases, 16-bit capability is sufficient for excellent display of photographic pictures on your computer. However, in some instances even a computer equipped with high-power video display cards may not be able to show the millions of colors possible from a digitized print. This would most likely be the result of improper display setup or software installation (see your video display card manual for details).

  2. Why do I have problems printing scanned pictures?
Make sure that the power supply is connected to the film drive and the printer is plugged into an electrical outlet, because the pass-through port must have power in order for your printer to work properly.

  3. Why is my scanned picture streaky?
The streaks may be on the original negative; check it first. If the streaks in the scanned picture run in the same di[shy ]rection as the scan path, try rewinding, then loading the film cassette. If streaks still appear, in the U.S. call Kodak at 1-800-235-6325. Elsewhere call Kodak in your country. Technical Support numbers are listed at the end of this document. Also, keep in mind that your scanned picture may appear streaky on your monitor but print just fine on a desktop printer. This is because the printer creates the image with halftone dots which can, in most cases, minimize the condition.

  4. How can I view the online documentation?
You need the ADOBE ACROBAT Reader installed on your computer for viewing online documentation. When you've completed installation of the KODAK ADVANTIX Software, reinsert the KODAK ADVANTIX Software CD and select Install ADOBE ACROBAT Reader from the browser menu. Follow the instructions provided on the screen.

  5. Why isn't there an on-off switch on the film drive?
We've intentionally eliminated an On/Off switch for film drive power. The film drive needs continuous power for the pass-through port to function and allow an attached printer to operate.

  6. Can I close the splash screen?
The Splash Screens in the KODAK Launcher Software and the KODAK ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) are designed to stay on your computer for 5 seconds before the next screen appears. The splash screen starts up the film drive, and cannot be dismissed.

  7. How should I set my monitor display for best results?
To improve the quality of your monitor display, set the colors on your monitor to thousands or millions of colors.

  8. Why does my image look dark on the monitor as it is being scanned for Preview?
This is normal operation of the film drive. During the preview scan, the scanned image data is shown on the monitor in its raw format. After the image is completely scanned, the image is redrawn on the monitor with corrections applied to make the image look as a print would.

  9. Does my film drive scan lamp need to warm up in order to scan properly?
No, the film drive utilizes a LED light source that does not require any warm-up time, giving you high-quality scans without the typical lamp warm-up time associated with most film scanners.

  10. Does the film have to be developed before the film drive can read it?
Yes, the film has to be processed before you can use it with the film drive. Look at the icons on the end of the film cassette. If the rectangle shape is highlighted white, it means that the film has been processed.

  11. Why doesn't the film drive door open so that I can extract my film cassette?
The film drive is designed to prevent the cassette door from opening if a film cassette is present in the film drive, and the film is in the film drive's film path.

To open the door, unplug the film drive's electrical power and then plug it back in. The film drive should rewind the film into the cassette and then you can open the door.

  12. Why are all my images displayed upside down?
Your Advanced Photo System camera recorded the film cartridge load information as a magnetic code instead of an optical code and the FD 300 does not have magnetic read/write capabilities. Thus, the film drive defaults to a right-side cartridge load. To resolve this, simply click Rotate-All to rotate all the images for proper viewing.

  13. Why do all the images appear blotchy and mis-colored?
This is caused by setting your Display to show 256 colors. Although the images are not pleasing on your monitor, if you e-mail or print the images, they should be excellent in quality. Refer to "why do the KODAK ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) and KODAK Launcher Software windows not display correctly?" in these FAQs.

  14. Why can't I open my imaging application while the KODAK ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) is active?
Some applications do not allow themselves to be active while the ADVANTIX Access Software (TWAIN) is active. This is a feature of the application. EASYPHOTO (in ADOBE PHOTODELUXE Software) is such an application. We recommend scanning and transferring all images you are interested in prior to working with the application. Once you close the ADVANTIX Access Software, you will be able to work in the application.

Film Drive Shared File Structure

What files are installed with the film drive?
Look in the Read Me File contained in your FD300 Software CD for a complete list of these files.

Appendix A - Modifying Computer Files and Closing Background Applications - WINDOWS 95 System

  1. Appendix A - Introduction
Application programs such as ADOBE Systems Software, KODAK Picture Easy Software, and device drivers can start up at boot-up and run in the background without the computer user's knowledge. Some of these programs or device drivers running in the background can interfere with the installation of software and should be closed down before software installation begins. You can start these application programs and device drivers from either line entries in the Win.ini file or from the Startup folder.

The following procedures will help you prevent these applications or drivers from starting at boot-up, and close down any item that started through the Startup folder. Usually you can use the Close Program window to close applications that start at boot-up by the Startup folder. However, you must edit the Win.ini file to prevent the applications started by the Win.ini entries from starting. We recommend that you prevent the Win.ini entries from loading first, then close down the remaining items.

When editing a configuration file to prevent a device driver from being started, we put a semi-colon (;) to the left of that statement in the file. This semi-colon is referred to as "remarking" (commenting) out the entry. Basically what happens is the computer "sees" the semicolon and ignores everything on the line to the right of it.

  2. Before Editing a Configuration (.ini) File
Making incorrect changes to any configuration (.ini) file can cause that application to function incorrectly. Making an improper change to the system.ini or win.ini can cause fatal errors, which could prevent your system from booting up. Therefore, it is important to make a backup copy of the file before you attempt to make any changes. If you are not comfortable with editing files, consult a computer expert for assistance.

  3. Making a Backup Copy
In the following examples we are using the win.ini file. If you are backing up some other file, substitute its name where 'win' appears in this example.
    1. Go to the MS-DOS prompt, Start > Programs > MS-DOS Prompt
    2. At the C:\> prompt, type: cd windows and press Enter.
    3. At the C:\WINDOWS > prompt type: copy win.ini win.kod and press Enter. (In this example, we made a backup of the win.ini file and called it a.kod file.)
    4. Type: exit and press Enter to return to WINDOWS 95.

  4. Closing Down the Background Applications
    1. From the WINDOWS 95 Desktop press the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys at the same time to open the Close Program window.
    2. Highlight the desired item and select 'End Task.'
    3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until everything but the Explorer entry is closed down.
    4. A second window may appear stating that a program is not responding, etc. Go ahead and select 'End Task' on this window also.
    5. If closing out a particular entry causes your computer to shut down and re-boot itself, leave that item running the next time.

Closing down the background applications will usually correct and allow a successful installation. If you are still experiencing installation problems, perform the "Editing the Win.ini File Procedure," below.

  5. Editing the Win.ini File
In the following example we are using the win.ini file. If you are editing a different configuration file, substitute its name where win.ini appears.
    1. Make a backup copy of the win.ini file; refer to 'Making a Backup Copy.'
    2. From the WINDOWS 95 Desktop select Start >Run > and type: notepad c:\WINDOWS\win.ini and click on OK.
    3. Locate the [WINDOWS] section of the win.ini file.
    4. Type a semi-colon (; ) to the left of the lines that start with load= or run=
      Examples:
      Before
      [WINDOWS]
      load= C:\afterdrk\adk30.exe
      run=LXDBOXCP.EXE
      NullPort=None
      ScreenSaveActive=1
      device=HP Laserjet 4 Plus,HPPCL5MS,LPT1:
      After
      [WINDOWS]
      ; load= C:\afterdrk\adk30.exe
      ; run=LXDBOXCP.EXE
      NullPort=None
      ScreenSaveActive=1
      device=HP Laserjet 4 Plus,HPPCL5MS,LPT1:
NOTE: One or both of the lines may be blank after the equal (=) sign; if so, you do not need to remark out that statement. If you feel that you have done something incorrectly, exit immediately without saving the changes.
    5. Select File > Save
    6. Select File > Exit
    7. To make these changes effective, you have to re-boot your computer.
    8. Exit from the WINDOWS 95 Desktop, Select Start > Shutdown > Restart the Computer?
    9. Proceed to 'Closing Down the Background Applications.'

  6. Re-Starting the Background Applications or Device Drivers
After installing the software and checking it out successfully, do the following to return your system to its normal state:
    1. Edit the win.ini file and remove any semi-colons (;) placed to the left of the Load= or Run= statements.
    2. Shut down and re-boot your computer.
