Kodak Snapshot Photo Scanner 1:

Contents

Updated 22 February 1999.

Troubleshooting the Message "Cannot connect"

("Cannot connect")
If you receive the message "Cannot connect" while running the software for your Kodak Snapshot Photo Scanner 1, or if some of your other applications will not work properly, read this document to determine what may have happened and how you can correct the problem so that you may continue to use your scanner.

Possible causes of "Cannot connect"

(Complete explanations appear in "Troubleshooting.")

  1. No power to the scanner.
  2. Scanner not connected properly to the parallel port.
  3. Problem with the cable or an incompatible device connected to the parallel port.
  4. Software not installed properly.
  5. Parallel port being used by some other software or device.
  6. Parallel port (physical port) not set properly.
  7. Scanner hardware failure.

Before Troubleshooting

Is there anything I should do before I begin troubleshooting this message?

  1. Disconnect anything that is plugged into the pass-through port (for example, printer, Iomega Zip drive, etc.). Leave the scanner plugged into the electrical outlet.
  2. Make sure that the scanner's connector is seated squarely in the parallel port and that the latching screws are tightened down.
  3. Look to see that the green indicator light on top of the scanner is slightly illuminated.
  4. Download the latest communications driver for the scanner from our Web site at http://www.kodak.com/productInfo/technicalInfo/snapshotDrivers.shtml or call 1-888-375-6325.

IMPORTANT: If you are unfamiliar or unsure of any operation of your computer that is called for in this document, such as Saving, Deleting, Copying, or Accessing files, etc., consult the user's guide for your computer, the on-line Help screens, or the computer manufacturer for details.

Troubleshooting

  1. No power to the scanner.
Be sure that your scanner is plugged into a live electrical outlet and that the plug is all the way into the scanner. The green indicator light on top of the scanner should be slightly illuminated at this point. If it is not, the scanner may require service; contact Kodak toll-free at 1-888-375-6325.

  2. Scanner not connected properly to the parallel port.
Remove the scanner cable from the parallel port and inspect the connector. If the pin(s) are bent, call Kodak toll free at 1-888-375-6325 for assistance. Do not attempt to straighten the bent pins; doing so may dislodge the pins. If the pins are normal, re-install the cable and secure the latching screws. Make sure that the connector is seated squarely in the parallel port and tightened down.

  3. Problem with the cable or an incompatible device connected to the parallel port.
The cable connected to the pass-through port may be too long (6 feet or shorter is recommended) or of poor quality. Use a quality cable (such as an IEEE 1284 standard cable or equivalent) of the recommended length.

As a troubleshooting technique, always disconnect any cables or devices from the pass-through port so that no signal from the printer or cable disrupts communication with the scanner during testing. Verify that the scanner is the sole device connected directly to the computer. After removing cables or devices, try to establish communications again through the Snapshot Calibrate & Test function.

  4. Software not installed properly.
This can happen if another program or application is open during the installtion of the scanner software causing the software to become corrupt, the files to be located in the wrong directories, or the wrong file versions to be placed in the directories. To correct follow these steps.

    Step Number Step Description
1 Close all applications that are running in the background.

Note: Because some applications launch automatically when you start up your computer, you may not be aware that they are running. Nevertheless you must close them before loading the scanner software.

Go to the WIN.INI file, look for any lines that begin with either load= or run= and insert a semicolon (;) immediately before the word load or run. (You will remove these semicolon(s) after reinstalling the software in STEP 2.) Save the changes, then reboot your computer. (Ignore any error messages that may be generated at this point.)

    In Addition:

WINDOWS 3.1x Users: Hold down Ctrl-Esc to view the Task List showing the applications that are presently running on your computer (open or minimized). Close all but Program Manager by highlighting each application then, using the mouse pointer, click the End Task button in the Task List dialog box.

Windows 95 Users: Check the WINDOWS 95 Taskbar for applications that may still be running and close each application from the Taskbar. Next press Ctrl-Alt-Del to access the Close Program pop-up window, highlight an open application, and click End Task to close it. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del again to access the Close Program window and close the next open application. Continue opening the Close Program window and closing applications until you have closed all but Explorer. Leave only Explorer running.

Note: On some applications, End Task may shut down your computer. If this happens, restart and bypass End Task on the application that caused the shutdown. Then continue with End Task on the remaining applications.

2 Note: You will need to reinstall the scanner software, but because doing so cannot fix files that were corrupted during a previous installation, be sure to follow the steps below.
2a Before you reinstall the software, manually delete all scanner files from the system. See the Appendix of this document for a Snapshot Software Directory that gives you the names and locations of these files. Choose Appendix A, B, C, or D depending on the version of your scanner software. To find the version, look for a number on the face of the software CD, for example, English V1.1, except in the case of version 1.0 which only says "English version."
2b Install the Snapshot Scanner software.
2c Copy all scanner files from the CD ROM to file directories on your hard drive. Consult the Appendix of this document for a Snapshot Software Directory that gives you the names and locations of the files. Choose Appendix A, B, C, or D depending on the version number of your scanner software. To find the version, look for a number on the face of the software, for example, English V1.1, except in the case of version 1.0 which only says "English version."

Note: If you are unsure of how to copy files from the CD ROM to your hard drive, consult the user's guide for your computer, the on-line Help screens, the computer manufacturer, or the WINDOWS Software user's guide for details.

BEFORE GOING TO STEP #3: After reinstalling the software and copying files to your hard drive, remove the semicolons (;) that you inserted into the WIN.INI file in STEP 1. Save the changes and reboot your computer.

IMPORTANT: If you are unfamiliar or unsure of any operation of your computer that is called for in this document, such as Saving, Deleting, Copying, or Accessing files, etc., consult the user's guide for your computer, the on-line Help screens, or the computer manufacturer for details.

3 Open the Snapshot Calibrate & Test window, click the Test button.

At this point, either an error message will appear, if the test program cannot find file snapdrv.dll, or the program will briefly display the messages below in this sequence:

SNAPDRV DLL VERSION 30 SUCCESSFULLY LOADED

    SCANNER COMMUNICATIONS OK

    SNAPDATA DLL SUCCESSFULLY LOADED

    LOOKING FOR TWAIN RESOURCES

Note: If the green indicator lamp on the scanner changes intensity even briefly or if the scanner white lamp comes on momentarily, some other software is definitely running in the background and resetting the port. See topic 5. Parallel port being used by some other software or device.

4 If all else fails, unplug the scanner and power down the computer. Reconnect the power to the scanner first, then restart the computer.
    5 Go back and repeat.STEP 3.
6 If you are unsuccessful after several attempts, please call Kodak at 1-888-375-6325 for assistance.

  5. Parallel port being used by some other software or device.
If any printing jobs are queued to the printer or if print monitoring devices are running, the communication line coming back from your scanner may continually reset. Disable these jobs, devices, or software applications, which can often be found in the WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI files. Then try to communicate again.

If you have any of the printers listed below, see Appendix D for workarounds or solutions. (This list was compiled as of 17 March 1997 and is not an all inclusive list.)

    • Canon BJC 610/620 printers
    • Canon multipass printer C2500
    • All Lexmark printers
    • HP Laserjet 4 (all models), 5L, and 5P
    • Okidata 600E

  6. Parallel port not set properly.

    Step Number Step Description
1 Access your computer's Setup (BIOS) file.

CAUTION: Errors in the Setup (BIOS) file can prevent your system from functioning properly. Therefore, if you are unsure how to access or change the Setup (BIOS) file, consult the user's guide for your computer, the on-line Help screens, or the computer manufacturer for details.

2 Browse through the file to find the Parallel Port Mode.

The choices (but not an all inclusive list) for parallel port mode might include SPP, EPP, ECP or a combination EPP/ECP and an option of EPP v1.7 or EPP v1.9.

3 Change the mode to SPP, Bi-directional, or Compatible.

Note: The parallel port may work properly for you in ECP (enhanced) or EPP (extended) mode, but the optimum setting is SPP (standard).

4 Save the change, exit, then reboot the computer.

In addition for WINDOWS 95 Software Users:

    Step Number Step Description
1 Click on the Start button.

    Click on Settings/Control Panel/SystemIcon/Check Device Manager/Ports (COM & LPT).

2 Double click on the printer port that the scanner is attached to (usually LPT1).
3 Click on the Resources tab.

The input/output range for the port LPT1 defaults to a single range, usually 0378-037A. If there is a second range such as 03BC-03BE, remove it.

IMPORTANT: If you are unfamiliar or unsure of any operation of your computer that is called for in this document, such as Saving, Deleting, Copying, or Accessing files, etc., consult the user's guide for your computer, the on-line Help screens, or the computer manufacturer for details.

  7. Scanner hardware failure.
A true system-hardware failure is extremely rare. Each KODAK Snapshot Photo Scanner undergoes a thorough quality control check before leaving the manufacturing facility. It is unlikely that you will have to replace the unit. However, if you feel you have a hardware problem and you have reviewed all of the steps in this document to determine the definite hardware issue, contact Kodak toll free at 1-888-375-6325.

APPENDIX D

Problem Resolution

PRINTER PROBLEM ANALYSIS RESOLUTION
Canon BJC 610/620 Shipped with a driver that takes control of the parallel port and prevents the KODAK Snapshot Photo Scanner 1 from communicating with the computer FIX 1: This following process removes the printer drivers. Therefore, the scanner will work but the printer will not. In order for both to operate, download the BJC 600e printer driver from Canon's Web site. With this driver, your printer's resolution is limited to 360 dpi
  1. Access your computer's SYSTEM.INI file. In the [386enh] section, remove the following files
    • device=wpsrcom.386
    • device=wpsrcem.386
    • device=wpsrbnd.386
  2. Save the file
  3. Go to the WIN.INI file and delete the following executable file in the load=line: wpsload.exe
  4. Save the file
  5. Reboot your computer.
Fix 2:
  1. Access your computer's SYSTEM.INI file. In the [386enh] section, type a semicolon (;) in front of each of the following lines:
    • ;device=wpsrcom.386
    • ;device=wpsrcem.386
    • ;device=wpsrbnd.386
    • This "remarks out" the lines, which should now appear like this:
    • ;device=wpsrcom.386
    • ;device=wpsrcem.386
    • ;device=wpsrbnd.386
  2. Save the file.
  3. Go to the WIN.INI file and remark out the following executable file in the load=line: wpsload.exe
  • The line should look like this:
  • ;wpsload.exe
  • Save the file.
  • Reboot your computer.
COMMENT: By removing the semicolons from in front of these lines, you can still access the printer drivers for 720 dpi. However, you must remark out the lines again each time you want to scan pictures.
Canon Multipass C2500 Printer has a software driver option that takes control of the parallel port. Fortunately, it also has a software switch that can disable port control.
  1. Click on the Canon icon for the printer.
  2. Click on the Canon Utilities icon
  3. Open Manager
  4. Access Preferences under the File menu
  5. Uncheck "Exclusive port control."
  6. Save the changes and reboot your computer.
  7. Check Task Manager, if you are using WINDOWS 3.1x, or Close Program, if you are using WINDOWS 95. If the Canon application server is running in the background, close it.
COMMENT: If communication still fails after disabling port control, make sure that the scanner's twain.dll and shared files are installed properly. (The Canon software loads a twain.dll also.)
HP Laserjet 4 (all models) and 5P Printer loads a status-monitoring program which you must edit in order for the scanner to communicate properly.
  1. Access your computer's WIN.INI file. In the load= statement, delete the following line or type a semicolon (;) in front of it:
    • hpsw.exe
    • Putting a semicolon in front of the line remarks it out, and the line should look like this:
    • ;hpsw.exe
  2. Go to the [Spooler] section of the WIN.INI file and, in the same manner, remark out or delete the following line: QP.LPT1=
  3. Save the file and reboot your computer.
HP Laserjet 5L Printer loads an executable file in which you must edit in order for the scanner to communicate properly.
  1. Access your computer's WIN.INI file. In the load= statement, delete the following line or type a semicolon (;) in front it:
    • hpljsw.exe
    • Putting a semicolon in front of the line remarks it out, and the line should look like this:
    • ;hpljsw.exe
  2. Go to the [Spooler] section of the WIN.INI file and, in the same manner, remark out or delete the following line: QP.LPT1=
  3. Save the file and reboot your computer
Lexmark-brand Shipped with a driver that takes full control of the parallel port and prevents the KODAK Snapshot Photo Scanner 1 from communicating with the computer.
  1. Access your computer's SYSTEM.INI file. In the [386enh] section, type a semicolon (;) in front of the following line:
    • device=lexsw2.386
    • This "remarks out" the line, which should now appear like this:
    • ;device=lexsw2.386
  2. Save the file and reboot your computer.
  3. Remove the printer from the scanner's pass-through port.
  4. Launch the software application and scan a picture.
Lexmark-brand A pass-through port with the serial no. 010010116112000002 (rev. c) supplied with the Snapshot Photo Scanner does not work with Lexmark printers. Select one of these options:
  1. A/B Switch Box
  2. Additional parallel port
Okidata 600E Printer software is designed such that all data sent to the parallel port is processed by the OL600E software. Data indicates that no other device may share the parallel port with the OL600E printer. The only recourse is to add a second parallel port to the system and to connect the scanner to this new port.
