Visit the Kodak Web site and download drivers to upgrade your system to the latest software. PhotoDoc 1.5 is the current driver available at http://www.kodak.com/global/en/software/photoDocDrivers.shtml. To upgrade to Version 1.5 you must have PhotoDoc Software version 1.0 or 1.0.1 already installed on your system.

  2. What are the main features of the KODAK PhotoDoc Color Scanner?
This desktop, sheet-fed, digital color scanner is designed for scanning photographic prints as well as documents. Its unique design has a footprint of only 6" x 12" and features an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). All of the software you need to create one-of-a-kind images or to edit documents is included. The scanner uses KODAK Color Management System to ensure the best color representation and KODAK Image Science algorithms to ensure the highest image quality in its class of scanners.

  3. Where can I buy the scanner?
The Photo Doc Scanner is a discontinued product and is no longer generally available for sale. However, the winning features of the scanner have extended its life. You may occasionally find it for sale, and find its features a good match for your imaging applications.

  4. How big is the scanner?
    The dimensions of the scanner are: 7.25" (high) x 11.5" (wide) x 6" (deep) (18.4 x 29.2 x 15.2 cm). The scanner weighs less than 4 lbs. (1.9 kg).

  5. Which computers can be used with the scanner? What are the system requirements?
The scanner can be used with any IBM or compatible computer using the MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 Operating System. You also need a CD-ROM drive on your computer in order to install the software.

    System Requirements:

    • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 Software
    • CD-ROM drive (for installation of software only)
    • 486 processor (66 MHz or higher)
    • 8 MB of RAM minimum; 16 MB or higher preferred

  6. Will the scanner work on a MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.x or DOS system?
This new 32-bit device driver only operates on a computer that has the WINDOWS 95 Operating System installed.

  7. Will the scanner function properly on MICROSOFT WINDOWS NT Operating System?
The PhotoDoc Version 1.5 Software release has operated successfully on several WINDOWS NT 4.0 systems. A WINDOWS NT 4.0 driver is available from the Kodak Web Site http://www.kodak.com/global/en/software/photoDocDrivers.shtml. This downloadable driver contains the PhotoDoc TWAIN and Troubleshooter modules only.

Note: While we have tested this version with WINDOWS NT 4.0, the WINDOWS NT platform remains unsupported. This software may or may not work with your WINDOWS NT 4.0 system, depending on your system configuration.

  8. Do you provide a driver so that I can use my scanner on a MACINTOSH computer?
We do not provide a scanner driver for MACINTOSH Computers.

  9. Do I need to buy anything else to make the scanner work with WINDOWS 95 Software?
Everything you need is included: the scanner, software, and scanner cable.

  10. What is the resolution of the scanner?
The resolution is stated as dpi (dots per inch). The scanner can scan up to 300 dpi optical; 1200 dpi software-enhanced resolution.

  11. What does "software-enhanced" resolution mean?
The scanner actually scans the image at 300 dpi and then the scanner's device driver provides the option of mathematically decreasing or increasing the number of dots per inch that are stored for that image. You also see enhanced resolution stated as "interpolated" resolution.

  12. What is the color depth of a scanned image?
Color depth is the number of shades (variations) of colors that can be obtained from an image. The more shades of color the scanner captures, the truer to the original any reproduction of the scanned image appears.

When you scan an image, the pixel data (color depth) for each pixel is 24-bit (16 million color variations, 8-bit/color) for color, or 8-bit (256 shades) for grayscale images (black-and-white photos). The "Black-and-White" resolution setting records the data as either black or white in a 1 bit format.

  13. Why are there different choices of scanning resolutions, and which one should I use to scan my images?
Having choices for scanning resolution allows you to tailor scans to your needs. The resolution you choose depends on the output you choose. When you scan an image, the higher the scan resolution (or number of colors) the bigger the resultant image file is.

To maintain good image quality from scanning to printing, and to maintain good file management, choose the resolution that gives you the best image for your output.

For example, if you are printing or enlarging your image or OCR scanning, you probably want to use a higher resolution (300 dpi). Faxing requires a lower resolution of 200 dpi. If you are e-mailing or displaying an image on your monitor, 72 dpi is the proper selection. (Most monitors only have a resolution of 72 to 90 dpi.) Scanning at a low resolution also conserves hard disk space.

The following table shows some scanning examples using different scanning resolution (detail) and color combinations, and the result of the scan.

    Scanning a 4 x 5-inch (10.2 x 12.7 cm) color print
    Scan setting Result
Color, 300 dpi 5.4 MB file
Grayscale, 300 dpi 1.8 MB file
Color, 72 dpi 324 KB (or 0.324 MB) file
Black and White, 300 dpi 225 KB (or 0.23 MB)

Printing to a 300 dpi color printer
    Scan setting Result
Color, 300 dpi Highest quality print
Color, 100 dpi Lesser quality print; you save space on your hard drive, but the print application adds 200 dots in every inch (to add up to 300 dpi).
Color, 600 dpi High quality print, but the print application removes 300 dots per inch, and the image file size takes three times more hard disk space than the file of a 300 dpi scan.

  14. What size prints or documents can I scan?
The smallest item that you can scan is 3.5" x 2" (9 cm x 5 cm) and the largest item is 8.5" x 14" (21.6 cm x 35.5 cm). When using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), the smallest size is 3.5" x 4" (9 cm x 10 cm).

  15. How many pages does the ADF hold at one time?
The ADF can hold up to ten pages of documents. Even though the ADF can hold more than one photograph, we strongly recommend that you insert only one photograph at a time.

  16. What software is included with the scanner?
Software applications available on the CD-ROM include:
    • MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! Software: The full version of this software allows you to enhance your photos in all kinds of exciting ways. You can also make greeting cards, photo collages, calendars, or anything else that you can put images into.
    • CAERE OMNIPAGE Limited Edition Software: This software is an optical character recognition (OCR) program that converts the printed words of your document into electronic data during scanning. It provides the means to scan a text document and to have the text brought up in a word-processing document for editing. This application also provides the means to correct any mis-interpolation of the scanned text.
    • KODAK Launcher: All the software applications furnished with your scanner can be started from this single point. This software provides the means to easily scan images and documents.
    • KODAK Picture Postcard Software: This software provide the means to put your scanned image into a postcard format with text message for sending by e-mail to your relatives, friends, or others.
    • KODAK PhotoDoc Acquire Module (Twain) Software: This software allows you to download pictures to Twain-compliant software applications such as KAI'S POWER GOO, MICROSOFT PICTURE IT!, MICROSOFT PUBLISHER, ADOBE PHOTODELUXE, ADOBE PHOTOSHOP, COREL DRAW, or ALDUS PAGEMAKER. This TWAIN module also allows the following image-manipulation features: Resolution selection, color balance, brightness/contrast controls, and SmartFix.
    • Meta Creations' KAI'S POWER GOO Software: This software lets you stretch, stir, or smudge your pictures into fun shapes. You can also easily make movies with your pictures.

  17. What is the warranty for this scanner?
A one-year warranty comes standard from Kodak.

  18. Does Kodak offer an extended warranty for the scanner?
For end users in the United States and Canada, we offer a Three-Year Service Agreement called Advanced Unit Replacement (AUR). This AUR agreement provides coverage for 36 months from the date of purchase plus a process for supplying a replacement scanner by the next business day. An AUR registration card is shipped with the scanner. If you have misplaced the registration card or would like additional information, in the United States call toll-free 1-888-375-6325 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern Standard Time), in Canada call 1-800-465-6325 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern Standard Time).

  19. Is there a software developer's toolkit for this scanner?
Yes. For more information go to http://www.kodak.com/US/en/developers/transition/transDRG.shtml.

Installation

  1. How much hard drive space do I need to install PhotoDoc Software?
Although the packaging for PhotoDoc Software and the User's Guide state that a minimum of 10 MB of hard drive space is required for software installation, this is true only for the minimum amount of space needed to store the minimum amount of programs. In fact, a minimum of 32 MB of hard drive space is required to perform the installation process because both PhotoDoc Software and WINDOWS 95 Software need temporary storage space for installation files.

  2. Should I connect the scanner with my computer turned on or off?
We strongly advise that you turn off the computer, scanner, and printer (if applicable) before connecting your scanner.

  3. Why are there two connectors on the back of the scanner? Which one do I use to attach the scanner to my computer?
Both connectors are standard DB25 parallel-port connectors. Use the connector labeled "To PC Parallel Port" to connect the scanner to your computer with the special parallel cable supplied with the scanner. The second port (labeled "To Printer") is what we call a "pass-through-port" connection. Because most computers have only one parallel port, your scanner provides this additional port for you to use to connect your parallel printer or other parallel device to your computer.

  4. Will a standard parallel port cable work for connecting the scanner to the computer?
The KODAK PhotoDoc Color Scanner requires a special parallel cable, which is supplied with the scanner, for connecting to the computer. This special parallel cable has male DB25 connections at both ends. Any other peripheral (such as a printer) that you want to connect to the scanner's pass-through port attaches to the scanner using a standard parallel cable. If necessary, purchase a replacement cable at your local computer electronics store.

  5. Can I use a parallel switch to hook up the scanner?
Yes, but use a switch box that switches all 25 signal lines. Look for a switch box that states "Premium Data Switch."

  6. What power source do I need?
The scanner is designed with a universal power supply which can operate from any power source of 110/220 Volts AC and 50/60 cycles. (Consult the "Specifications" section in the scanner's User's Guide.)

  7. The installation procedure mentions closing all applications before installing the scanner's software. How do I do this?
If you know that an application is running, go to the application's File menu and select Exit.

To close applications when using WINDOWS 95, use the Ctrl-Alt-Del keyboard combination to bring up the Close Program window. Using the Close Program window, highlight the task you want to close and select End Task. You should close all tasks except Explorer.

Note: Some applications do not appear to be active, but need to be closed, just the same. These applications may appear as icons on the WINDOWS 95 Start Bar such as the MICROSOFT OFFICE toolbar or other desktop locations such as video display tools and screensavers. Refer to the ReadMe file on the CD-ROM for the PhotoDoc scanner or APPENDIX A at the end of these FAQs for information about closing these applications.

  8. How do I register my copy of CAERE OMNIPAGE Limited Edition Software?
Start the CAERE OMNIPAGE Limited Edition program as a stand-alone application. If you have not registered, a registration screen appears and lead you through the registration process. Or, select the Register menu option on the menu bar, and follow the on-screen instructions.

General Use

  1. How much computer memory do I need to work with images?
The more random access memory (RAM) you have, the faster your computer can work with images. Basically, RAM is the computer's scratch pad--the place where all the work is done. We state 8 MB of RAM as the minimum system requirement, but 16 MB or more is even better. In addition, the more free space you have available on your hard drive the more image files you can store.

  2. How much hard drive space do images take?
Generally, you should have free hard disk space equal to three (3) times the size of the image file. To determine this for color images, multiply the image size by the scanning dpi (if color, then multiply that number by 3) and then multiply that total value by three.

For example, a 4 x 6 print scanned at 300 dpi would require 20 MB of free disk space as shown below:

[(4x300) (6x300]3 = image file size; image file size x 3 = needed hard drive space.

  3. How can I reduce the size of the image files that I want to store on my hard drive?
You can reduce the size of the image files by scanning at a lower resolution or saving the images in JPEG (compressed) format. However, in both cases, you sacrifice image quality for greater compression (smaller file size).

  4. Why isn't there an On/Off switch on the scanner?
The PhotoDoc Color Scanner does not have an On/Off switch because the scanner must be on in order to supply power to its parallel pass-through port. If you attached a printer to the scanner's pass-through port with the scanner unplugged, the printer would not operate. In order to turn off the scanner lamp at your command, upgrade to the PhotoDoc Version 1.5 Software. To do this, visit the Kodak Web Site at http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/software/photoDocDrivers.shtml.

  5. Why can't I turn the scan lamp off?
The scanner's lamp turns on as soon as you plug in the scanner's power source, and remains on until the computer signals the lamp to turn off. A driver (PD11bkgd) runs in the background and sends a signal that turns off the scanner's lamp either at boot-up or 15 minutes after you leave the Launcher or TWAIN windows. In response to customer request, a LampOff driver is included in the latest software version. Upgrading to software Version 1.5 places a LampOff icon on the WINDOWS 95 desktop that enables you to turn off the scanner lamp when you wish. Download the PhotoDoc Version 1.5 Updater from this URL: http://www.kodak.com/global/en/software/photoDocDrivers.shtml.

  6. Can you tell me more about the LampOff Driver?
The LampOff driver allows you to turn off the scanner lamp when you wish instead of waiting the 15 minutes after scanning is completed. This driver allows you to turn the lamp off whenever you want to.

  7. Is there any time when I shouldn't use the PhotoDoc LampOff driver?
Don't use the Lamp Off command when you are in the PhotoDoc TWAIN window. If you try to turn the Lamp Off, you see the following message:

Your PhotoDoc Software may be running.

Do you want to turn the scanner lamp off anyway?

If you answer 'Yes', the lamp goes off. The only way to turn the lamp back on is to exit the TWAIN window and re-enter.

  8. Why can't I scan an image or document at the same time I print another?
Although your scanner's pass-through port allows you to attach both the scanner and printer to a single parallel port on your computer, only one device at a time can "talk" to the computer. So you can either scan or print, but not both at the same time.

  9. Why do I have to wait for the lamp to warm up?
Allowing time for the lamp to warm up not only ensures the best image quality but helps prolong the life of the lamp. If the scanner is idle for a specific time period, the lamp turns off automatically in order to prolong its life. Then when you are once again ready to scan, an internal timer prevents you from scanning until the lamp has warmed up to the proper illumination level for the best image quality possible. If you scan before the lamp has fully warmed up, the image could appear underexposed (darker then normal).

  10. My computer is running slowly and it indicates that 100% of my system resources are being used when entering WINDOWS 95. What is causing this?
This should happen only with the Version 1.0 Software. The PD11bkgd driver, which turns off the scanner's lamp, runs constantly in the background and can cause the system to appear to lock up.
    1. You can prevent this driver from running, but the scan lamp is be on all of the time.
    2. Update to Version 1.0.5 Software.

  11. After I finished scanning I opened another application. My computer hung up for one or two seconds. Is this normal?
This is normal if the PD11bkgd driver is running in the background. After you exit the scanner's Twain window or Launcher application, the scanner driver checks the scanner 15 minutes after exiting to turn off the scan lamp.

  12. How can I read the documentation provided by KAI'S POWER GOO and CAERE'S OMNIPAGE Limited Edition Software?
Simply install the ADOBE Acrobat Reader on your hard drive and you can read and print this documentation. The Acrobat installer (Acroread.exe) is provided in the following directory for V 1.0 (and if updated to v 1.0.1 or 1.5 from the Web Updater):
    1. \Program Files\Kodak PhotoDoc\Adobe Acrobat Reader\Acroread.exe
    2. Locate the Acroread.exe file and double-click on it

    -or-

    1. Select Run... from the Start menu
    2. Type C:\Program Files\Kodak PhotoDoc\Adobe Acrobat Reader\Acroread.exe in the Run dialog box
    3. Press the Enter key

If you are using version 1.0.1 or 1.5, select Start> Program> Kodak PhotoDoc> Acrobat Reader Installer.

  13. What are typical scan times for scanning an image?
The following table is intended to show average scan times. Your system may perform slower or faster as a result of the system configuration or other applications that may be running simultaneously. The Setting that affects the scanning speed the most is the Parallel Port Mode. We recommend setting the Parallel Port Mode to ECP or EPP. The Parallel Port Mode is set through the PC BIOS setup. Consult your computer vendor for instructions for changing this setting.

    Scanning Time (seconds)
Size of Original Print or Document Resolution Setting (dpi) Black and White Scan Grayscale Scan Color Scan
    8.5" x 11" (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) 100 10 10 20
    8.5" x 11" (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) 200 10 20 60
    8.5" x 11" (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) 300 10 45 160
    4" x 6" (10.2 cm x 15.2 cm) 300 12 25 60

  14. Why can't I use the Scan/Fax feature from the Launcher application?
To use the Scan/Fax feature you must have a fax modem either installed internally or connected externally to your computer. Test the operation of your fax modem by sending a fax either from the fax application provided with the modem or from some other application, such as MICROSOFT WORD. If you cannot fax from either of these application, contact your fax modem or computer retailer for assistance.

Note: To fax a document from an application such as MICROSOFT WORD, you perform all of the commands as if you were going to print the document from the File menu, but select your fax as the printer.

  15. Why doesn't the image look right after I transfer it to my imaging application? It looked all right in the PhotoDoc Scanner's TWAIN window when I was scanning.
You probably did a prescan initially and selected only a portion of the image for scanning or you did some color correction. The image that you see in the PhotoDoc Scanner's TWAIN window is the prescanned image. After doing the prescan and enhancing your image, you must reinsert the image and scan it a second time. In order to speed up the scanning process, the second scan of the image is not displayed on the monitor while the scanning is being done. Instead, the prescanned image remains visible, and you won't know if you scanned the correct area until you transfer the image to the application. So, after you have prescanned and enhanced the image, always check to make sure that you placed the image in the proper orientation for the second scan.

  16. After I scanned my document using CAERE OMNIPAGE Limited Edition Software (the OCR utility), why did all of the text look like a foreign language when I viewed it in my word-processing application?
This is possible if you scanned the document upside down. Always make sure to insert the top of your document into the scanner first.

  17. I scanned a newspaper article, but all of the text in the resulting word-processing document was formatted in a single column instead of multiple columns like a newspaper. Why?
The OCR package--CAERE OMNIPAGE Limited Edition Software--presents text in single-column format only. If you need to scan and retain text in multiple columns, you can contact product support at the Caere Corporation (phone 1-408-395-8319 in the United States or send e-mail to support@caere.com) to purchase an upgrade to CAERE OMNIPAGE Pro Edition Software.

  18. Why can't I save an OCR scan in long file name format or locate My Document folder in the Save As window?
CAERE OMNIPAGE is a WINDOWS 3.X and WINDOWS 95 product, and it uses the old WINDOWS file format of 8 characters. The "My Document" folder displays as mydoc~1.

  19. My PhotoDoc Software is registering as KAI'S POWER GOO in the Control Panel's Add or Remove programs. What should I do?
We don't know the reason, but WINDOWS 95 logs the PhotoDoc installation as KAI'S POWER GOO in the Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs window. Selecting this KAI'S POWER GOO entry automatically removes all of the PhotoDoc Software programs (just as though you selected Start, Program, Kodak PhotoDoc, and Un-install All PhotoDoc Files). To un-install the KAI'S POWER GOO Software package, completely un-install the PhotoDoc Software and then perform a custom installation.

  20. Why can't I view the contents of the CD-ROM?
Once you've installed the software, you can only view the contents of the CD-ROM using Explorer in WINDOWS 95. This is a precaution so that the installer program for the scanner does not start again if you insert the CD-ROM into your computer.

  21. Why can't I use the Scan/E-mail feature of the Launcher utility?
As stated in the User's Guide, your computer must have a MAPI compliant e-mail application installed on it in order to use the Scan/E-mail feature. At present, only MICROSOFT NetWork (MSN), EUDORA (Light or Pro versions), and NETSCAPE Version 3.01 Software are MAPI compliant. Please note that WINDOWS 95 comes with the option to install the MSN. If you tried to install this e-mail service in the past, the launcher sees this as a MAPI compliant application and thus provides the Scan/E-mail feature. If you have not contracted with Microsoft Corp. for this service, the Scan/E-mail feature won't work.

  22. Every time I try to do a Scan/E-mail, MICROSOFT Internet Explorer pops up. I have Netscape installed. What should I do?
The PhotoDoc Launcher application checks the WINDOWS 95 Registry file for a Registered MAPI Mail application when it starts. If PhotoDoc Launcher does not find an entry, it assumes that there is no mail application available.

In order for Scan/E-mail to work, the E-mail application must be MAPI compliant, which means that you need NETSCAPE Software version 3.01 or higher. In addition, NETSCAPE must be selected as the mail application. To do this, start NETSCAPE. Go to Options > Mail and News Preference > Appearance and check the 'Use NETSCAPE for Mail and News' option.

If the problem continues, contact NETSCAPE to get the program to register itself in the WINDOWS 95 Registry.

  23. Why can't I install MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! Software? I had no trouble installing the PhotoDoc Software.
    1. Locate the c:\windows\system folder.
    2. Delete all of the files from this folder.
    3. Un-install PICTURE IT! Software from the Add/Remove programs in Control Panel
    4. Locate the MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! folder and delete it.
    5. Ensure that 32-bit file access is enabled. To do this, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Performance > File System > Troubleshooter > De-select the 'Disable all 32-bit protect-mode' disk drivers statement.
    6. Re-boot the system.
    7. Install the PICTURE IT! Software.

  24. I noticed an MFC42.dll error when I booted up my system. What should I do?
The PhotoDoc installer writes an MFC42.dll file during installation which in some cases is older than the version some applications need, and this creates an error. To resolve this, try re-installing the application that is causing the error. If that is not possible,
    1. Check the hard drive of your computer to see if there are other copies of mfc42.dll.
    2. If a copy is located with the version 4.21.6453 or higher, copy that file to c:\windows\system folder and then re-boot.

  25. Why won't MICROSOFT PUBLISHER work with my scanner since I installed PhotoDoc Software version 1.5?
The PhotoDoc scanner with version 1.5 software does not work with MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 97 unless you just do a simple Scan and Transfer. This means when you enter the PhotoDoc Twain window, click on Scan and Transfer without doing a prescan and then a Select or Enhance. To solve the problem you need to un-install version 1.5 Software and re-install version 1.0 or 1.0.1.
    1. Un-install PhotoDoc Software.
    2. Perform a custom installation of the PhotoDoc Software, de-selecting CAERE OMNIPAGE Limited Edition Software.
If you install OMNIPAGE Software on top of an existing installation, errors are possible. If an error occurs, see the following question, below.
      or
    1. Locate the following two files: photodoc.dll and photodoc.ds on the PhotoDoc Software CD in the x:\IN_CASE\TWAIN_32\ENGLISH\PHOTODOC folder, where x is the CD ROM drive letter.
    2. Copy the photodoc.dll and photodoc.ds files to the c:\windows\twain_32\PhotoDoc folder.

  26. When I attempt to OCR a document from the Launcher, I only get an Open File window. The scanner works in all other applications, but the OMNIPAGE LE application does not recognize the scanner. What should I do?
Try to OCR from the KODAK Launcher Software. If the Open File window comes up, it indicates that the OMNIPAGE application does not "see" the scanner. Start the OMNIPAGE application by Start> Programs> CAERE Applications > OMNIPAGE Limited Edition. In the OMNIPAGE application, select "Tools, Scanner Settings." If it is grayed out, then the OMNIPAGE Software did not "see" the scanner. To correct the problem, un-install and re-install both the OMNIPAGE and PhotoDoc Software. Refer to "How to Completely Un-install all the PhotoDoc Software" in the Troubleshooting section of these FAQs. Then, perform a Custom PhotoDoc Software Installation. To do this, refer to "Perform a Custom PhotoDoc Install" in the Troubleshooting section of these FAQs.

  27. I scanned and e-mailed a document to my friends, but they cannot view it their e-mail application. Why?
Unless you scanned the document using the OCR utility, the application converted and sent the data as a bitmap image--a file with a bitmap (.bmp) extension. Your friends can view this bitmap-image file only in an imaging application. WINDOWS 95 provides either an application called Paint or Imaging. You can access these applications from Start> Programs> Accessories. If you scan the document using the OCR utility and then e-mail it, your friends do not have to use the imaging application to view it.

  28. Why is the space on my hard drive filling up even though I haven't saved many images to it?
You may be using the Scan/E-mail feature frequently. When you Scan/E-mail, the document or image is e-mailed as an attached bitmap (.bmp) image file. The e-mail application saves the bitmap file on the hard drive, so that you can retransmit the same message if needed. Periodically, you have to manually delete these files to free up hard drive space. The files are usually stored in the e-mail application folder. For example, Eudora puts these (.bmp) files in the c:\program files\eudora\attach folder (assuming that Eudora was installed on your C:\ drive in the Program Files folder).

  29. When I scan an image into KAI'S POWER GOO, why do I lose some of the image?
When you scan an image into KAI'S POWER GOO Software, the application crops the image to a square and then scales it to 360 x 360 pixels. The number of pixels is equal to the dpi (resolution) times the number of inches scanned. For example, scanning a 5 x 7-inch photograph at 200 dpi results in an image size of 1000 x 1400 pixels. KAI's POWER GOO Software crops the image to 5 x 5 inches (1000 x 1000 pixels) and then scales it (removes pixels) to 360 x 360 pixels.

  30. Why do I sometimes have difficulty scanning images in MICROSOFT PICTURE IT Software?
Try scanning the image at a lower resolution. This application accommodates only image files that are a maximum of 3968 x 3968 pixels. The number of pixels equals dpi times inches scanned, for example, a 5 x 7-inch photograph scanned at 200 dpi results in an image size of 1000 x 1400 pixels. Scanning the same image at 600 dpi results in an image size of 3000 x 4200 pixels--too large for this application.

  31. After using the KODAK PhotoDoc Version 1.5 Updater from the Web, why won't my computer shut-down to re-boot?
Reset your computer or cycle its power. This lockup should happen only once, at the end of the update process, and everything should function properly after the re-boot.

  32. Why can't I access images from the KAI'S POWER GOO Library? From the KAI's 'In Room', I select the option to 'Get Images from Library' but I only get an error message to insert the KAI's CD-ROM. I insert the PhotoDoc CD-ROM and continue to get the error message that the CD is not inserted.
This occurs with PhotoDoc Software versions 1.0 and 1.0.1. There is an incorrect hard-coded statement in one of KAI's data files that does not point to the correct location to obtain the image data that is contained on the CD.
    1. There are two solutions: This solution requires 20 MB of free hard drive space.
Note: If you installed PhotoDoc Software, you must copy the .axi files from x:\PhotoDoc\Metatool\Library (where x: is your CD-ROM drive letter) to the C:\Program Files\KODAK PhotoDoc\KAI's Power Goo folder.
      • Copy the five (5) '.axi' files for the PhotoDoc CD-ROM to the hard drive where the PhotoDoc Software resides.
      • Place the .axi files in the root directory of the KAI'S POWER GOO folder, located in the Kodak PhotoDoc folder.
    2. Upgrade to the PhotoDoc Version 1.5 Software. To do this, visit the Kodak Web Site .

  33. The HEWLETT PACKARD LASERJET 5L printer does not print when attached to the PhotoDoc's pass-through port (PTP). If I try to print, I get an LPT1 error.
The HEWLETT PACKARD LASERJET 5L printer is not compatible with the KODAK PhotoDoc Color Scanner. However, testing with samples of other Hewlett Packard printers, both LASERJET and INKJET, show that they are compatible with the PhotoDoc Color Scanner.

The software comes with the printer driver on three (3) floppy diskettes, labeled 1 through 3. These diskettes contain two versions of software that Hewlett Packard refers to as Host (Printing) software and PCL driver. When installing the software, you can choose to do a "typical" or "custom" installation. Regardless of the installation you choose, the Host software is usually installed. The Host software prevents the printer from printing when it is attached to the scanner's pass-through port. Installing the HP PCL driver allows the HP printer to print while attached to the PhotoDoc's pass-through port.

Printing when using the HP5L PCL driver can create artifacts in the printed image, while text documents appear to print without a problem. The image artifact is usually a random line of postscript characters printed where image data should be.

We recommend the following solutions to the HP5L printing issues:

    1. Install a second parallel port card in the PC.
    2. Use a Premium A/B switch box
    3. Attach only one of devices to the parallel port at a time.
    4. Install the HP PCL driver.

Procedure to Install the HP5L PCL Driver:

Check to see that you have the HP Host Software installed. To do this, locate the HP menu in the Programs menu using this path: Start > Programs > HP Laserjet 5L printer. This procedure also requires the HP Laserjet 5L Printing Software for WINDOWS provided by HP on three (3) floppy diskettes. If the software diskettes are not available you can download the latest HP drivers from the following HP web site: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/prodhome/lj5l.html.

    1. Un-install the HP Laserjet 5L Printing Software. Start > Programs> HP Laserjet 5L Printer> HP 5L Un-install.
    2. Go to the Printers folder (Start > Settings >Printers) and ensure that the HP 5L printer is removed. If the HP 5L icon is still present, highlight the icon and press the Delete (Del) key.
    3. Re-boot the PC. During boot-up, the computer should recognize that the printer is attached and ask you to install the printer driver. (If WINDOWS 95 does not recognize the HP 5L printer during boot-up, skip to step 6.
    4. Insert Disk 3 of the HP LASERJET 5L Printing Software for WINDOWS.
    5. Follow instructions to complete the software installation.
      • Do the following steps if WINDOWS 95 did not recognize the printer during boot-up.
    6. Start > Settings > Printers select "Add Printers."
    7. Insert Disk 3 of the HP LASERJET 5L Printing Software for WINDOWS.
    8. Follow instructions provided by the Add Printer Wizard and select "Have Disk."

  34. I Upgraded to KAI'S POWER GOO FULL EDITIONs, but now KAI's won't run from the Launcher.
It probably won't run because the KAI'S POWER GOO SE installer over-wrote a file that is shared but is an earlier version than the version the Launcher requires. This file is the c:\Windows\Pcdlib32.dll. The PhotoDoc scanner requires version 3,0,0,0 of this file. Therefore, you may use one of the following options:
    • Perform a PhotoDoc Custom installation without un-installing the PhotoDoc Software and only re-install Picture Postcard. Or,
    • Re-Install MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! (Note: to un-install PICTURE IT!, you have to use the WINDOWS 95 Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.)

  35. My prints made from the scanned image appear different in color compared with the original print, and I didn't do any color enhancements.
The PhotoDoc Twain provides an option of utilizing KODAK Color Management Software (KCMS) to ensure the best color representation of the scanned image on your monitor. If KCMS is enabled, the Twain driver corrects the resulting image file to display the proper color on the monitor. This KCMS feature could affect the colors of the image when printed.

If you notice minor differences between the original scan and the printed output, try scanning the image with KCMS disabled.

Note: Remember, changing the status of KCMS does not take effect until the PhotoDoc Twain is closed, then re-opened. Or try using SmartFix or Customized to get the desired output.

  36. I was able to Acquire Text (OCR a document) directly from MICROSOFT WORD (Office 95) until I upgraded to Office 97, and now I can't. What happened?
OMNIPAGE LE Software does not recognize MICROSOFT WORD 97 as an OCR-Aware application. Perform the OCR function either through the Launcher or OMNIPAGE Software and save the file as a RTF or DOC file, then open the document in your MICROSOFT WORD application.

OMNIPAGE allows you to add the OCR Aware capabilities to many applications such as word processors or spreadsheets. It is easy to do:

    1. Start the desired application
    2. Launch OMNIPAGE as a stand-alone application.
    3. Select OCR Aware from the Tools menu.
The application appears under the Unregistered Application window.
    4. Move the desired selection to the Registered window.
    5. When you use the specific application, there is an 'Acquire Text' selection listed under the File menu.

  37. Why does the PhotoDoc Twain window disappear after each scan when I am using ADOBE PHOTODELUXE 1.0 Software?
This problem does occur, whether you selected the PhotoDocTWAIN preference of a) dismissing or b) retaining the Twain window after Scan-and-Transfer. Unfortunately, there is no solution. You need to go through the Twain acquire procedure every time you want to scan an image into PhotoDeluxe.

  38. Why can't I do a Scan/Print from the Launcher when my printer prints from all other applications correctly? I usually get a Printer or LPT port error.
There is probably not enough hard drive space left. We don't know the exact amount of space you need because it varies with systems and printers. For example, the KODAK Twain uses a memory space of almost 3 times the calculated image size and the printer driver/spooler also requires an 'x' amount. Try these suggestions to improve performance:
    1. Verify that the printer works okay from another application.
    2. Check the amount of free hard drive space available.
    3. Close other applications running in the background (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
    4. Scan a smaller area or at a lower resolution.

If Step 4 is successful, it indicates that you should:

    • Free up hard drive space
      • Scan smaller area
      • Scan at lower dpi (resolution)

  39. Why is the image I transferred to my image application smaller than the image area I scanned?
This could be caused by one of the following:
    • MICROSOFT PICTURE IT!, KAI's POWER GOO, and PICTURE WORK'S PHOTOENHANCER each have a file size limit and crops the images to fit within their limits. Refer to the ReadMe file for specifics. If you think your image was cropped for this reason, then scan at a lower resolution (dpi).
    • If you Scan-and-Transfer without preassigning, and 'Show Last Image Scanned' is enabled, the scanner scans the item at 8.5" wide by the last height selected . For example: if your last prescan was 6" x 4", and you scan/transfer a 7" x 11", then an image 8.5" x 4" transfers to the application.

  40. Why does my computer lock-up after I scan an image into ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 4.0 Software? The image scans without a problem, but my system locks-up with the PhotoDoc TWAIN window in the foreground.
When using the PhotoDoc TWAIN module with ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 4.0, you must select the PhotoDoc TWAIN preference option to "Dismiss TWAIN window after Scan-and-Transfer." This is also the default TWAIN selection.

If you de-select the option in order to keep the PhotoDoc TWAIN window up (for scanning without re-selecting the TWAIN Acquire Menu option), the system locks-up with the PhotoDoc TWAIN window in the foreground and the PHOTOSHOP window in the background after the image transfers to PHOTOSHOP. To exit, cancel (Close) the PhotoDoc TWAIN window. If you are unable to close the PhotoDoc TWAIN window by normal means, you has to use the Close Program Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) to close (End Task) the PhotoDoc TWAIN window and also the Twunk_16 driver. To avoid this situation you must select to "Dismiss TWAIN window after Scan-and-Transfer."

  41. My PhotoDoc Color Scanner won't work with my color printer.
The EPSON Stylus Color 600 printer, when attached to the PhotoDoc's parallel pass-through port, prints out garbled images or produce several blank pages when the computer attempts to communicate with the scanner.

The printer needs to be on its own port; we know this because the printer functions properly when not attached to the scanner's pass-through port (PTP). We suggest that you use one or more of these steps:

    1. Install a second parallel port card in the PC.
    2. Use a Premium A/B switch box.
    3. Attach only one of devices to the parallel port at a time.

  42. The image appears on the monitor as if the scanner only scanned small portions of the image. Why?
This can happen when the scanner door is not firmly closed. As the paper moves through the scanner, the "paper detect" switch intermittently loses contact with the paper.
    1. Make sure that the Paper Tray is correctly installed, i.e., seated properly in the slot
    2. Make sure that the door is firmly closed. To do this, simply open and close the door.

  43. Can you help me make a calendar for 1998?
MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! Version 1.0 is shipped with the PhotoDoc scanner. This version of PICTURE IT! only has calendar templates for 1996 and 1997.

A demo of PICTURE IT! 2.0 version is available which provides calendars between 1800 and 2200.

If you don't have access to the World Wide Web contact Kodak Technical Support at 1-888-375-6325 for an alternative method to obtain the calendar templates.

Troubleshooting

  1. Why didn't I get any program icons when I installed PhotoDoc Software?
If you were re-installed PhotoDoc Software and no program icons appeared, follow these steps:
    1. Delete all entries in the windows\temp folder.
    2. Un-install PhotoDoc Software.
    3. Re-install PhotoDoc Software.

If you installed PhotoDoc Software for the first time and no program icons appeared, check to see if you can log on as a different user. The PhotoDoc installer only installs menu items in the StartMenu\Programs folder of the user who is currently logged on, and they are not visible to a different user with a customized desktop.

    1. Using WINDOWS Explorer, verify that the installer placed the PhotoDoc folder in the Windows\StartMenu\Programs folder.
    2. If the PhotoDoc folder is not present, re-boot.
    3. Press Cancel at the Log-on prompt (This prevents you from logging-in as a user)
    4. Do a Custom installation of PhotoDoc Software, installing only the Twain, Launcher, and Troubleshooter applications.
    5. Using WINDOWS Explorer, make sure that there is a Profile folder in the windows directory. (If no Profile folder is present, then multi-users was never enabled.)
    6. If a Profile folder exists, copy the Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Kodak\PhotoDoc folder to the Windows\Profile\xxxxxx\StartMenu\Programs folder. (xxxxxx is the same name that you are logging-on with).

  2. I upgraded to PhotoDoc Version 1.0.1 from 1.0 using the 1.0.1 CD. Shouldn't I see some difference in the scanner operation?
A file called photodoc.vxd provides the enhanced software features. However, when you upgrade from the CD ROM, the "old" file remains and therefore the enhancements are not available. If you update from the PhotoDoc Updater at the URL: http://www.kodak.com/productInfo/technicalInfo/photoDocDrivers.shtml, the file is overwritten properly.

After un-installing the PhotoDoc Software and before re-installing, you can manually delete the following file: c:\windows\system\photodoc.vxd. Or, download PhotoDoc Updater from the Web and install.

  3. When I installed PhotoDoc Version 1.01 or 1.5 I had a lot of problems. The problems disappeared when I un-installed the software. What should I do?
If you have installed PhotoDoc Version 1.01 or 1.5 software and your system has lost functionality such as the mouse, sound, CD-ROM, or your computer just won't reboot, it could be caused by a memory conflict between the chipio.386 driver that is installed with the PhotoDoc Software and a system driver on your hard drive.

The chipio.386 driver increases the speed for things to happen, such as the TWAIN, and it may be loading into memory space that is already occupied or possibly it is preventing a system driver from loading into the memory allocation it requires. You do not need this driver in order to operate the PhotoDoc scanner, and the scanner maintains full features and functionality without it.

With the PhotoDoc Version 1.01 or 1.5 installed, boot your computer using the safe mode, that is,

    • Shut down your computer
    • Turn on your computer.
    • At the message "Starting MS WINDOWS 95..." Press F5.
    1. A Run Window appears; type: edit c:\windows\system.ini.
    2. Using the scroll bar on the right scroll through the text until you reach the [386 Enh] section.
    3. Place a semi-colon (;) before the device=c\windows\system\chipio.386 statement. This prevents the driver from starting.
    4. Exit from the editor and save changes. (If you think you made a mistake, exit without saving changes and start over at step 1.)
    5. Reboot your computer.

Note: See Appendix A and B at the end of this FAQ document for details about editing a configuration file.

  4. Why can't I install PhotoDoc Version 1.5 Updater from the Web without an error?
One of the features of the Version 1.5 Updater corrects an error and allows you to access KAI's POWER GOO image library from the PhotoDoc CD. If you are receiving an error that asks you to locate the "pathname.dat" file, install KAI's POWER GOO and then try to install the PhotoDoc Version 1.5 Updater again.

  5. Why can't I scan directly from CAERE OMNIPAGE Pro 7.0 and the PhotoDoc Scanner even though it scans properly through PhotoDoc Launcher?
Download the PhotoDoc.exe patch from the Caere Web Site at http://www.caere.com. This was an OMNIPAGE Pro 7.0 issue that was resolved by Caere.

  6. When I attempted to scan (trying to launch the Twain) my system gave me an "Illegal call to dll" error. What should I do?
The cause of this problem could be the video driver. Contact the manufacturer's web site and for the latest version of video driver. Download the latest version of the video driver and re-install into your system.

  7. My PhotoDoc scanner was working with OMNIPAGE LE, but after I upgraded to OMNIPAGE Pro, my scanner no longer works with OMNIPAGE Software. Why?
This problem should only occur if you have PhotoDoc Scanner Software Ver. 1.0. Problems with the OMNIPAGE Pro Software were corrected in versions 1.0.1 and 1.5. Also, during the OMNIPAGE Pro installation, you must install the Scan Manager. To resolve this problem, do the following:

    For Version 1.0 Users:

    1. Upgrade to Version 1.5 Software
    2. Un-install both OMNIPAGE LE and OMNIPAGE Pro and re-install OMNIPAGE Pro
    3. During the OMNIPAGE Pro installation, you must select the option to install the Scan Manager.
    4. Refer to Caere for support

For Version 1.0.1 and 1.5 Users:

    1. Un-install both OMNIPAGE LE and OMNIPAGE Pro and re-install OMNIPAGE Pro
    2. During the OMNIPAGE Pro installation, you must select the option to install the Scan Manager.
    3. Refer to Caere for support

  8. When I attempted to install the software that came with the PhotoDoc scanner, the installation stopped at 95% completion and now my computer is locked up!
At the 95% mark the installation switches from the Kodak portion of the installation to the CAERE OMNIPAGE installer. The OMNIPAGE portion is 10 times larger, so it may appear, as you look at the OMNIPAGE installer shield screen, that the system has locked up, when it really has not.

    Things to Note:

    1. What does the text at the bottom of the installation window say?
    2. Is the 95% Bar up or is the OMNIPAGE installation shield up?
If this proves to be a problem, do the following:
      1. Un-install all software (Refer to 'How to completely Un-install all the PhotoDoc Software' in the Troubleshooting section of these FAQs)
      2. Re-install the software (Refer to 'Perform a Custom PhotoDoc Install' In the Troubleshooting section of these FAQs)
      3. If everything works then, and you want to add "OCR-aware" capabilities, you can do so through the OMNIPAGE application. For an application to be eligible for OCR-aware in OMNIPAGE, it usually has to be running before you start the OMNIPAGE Software. Refer to the CAERE OMNIPAGE LE Section.

  9. Why don't my pictures look right on the monitor?
This is likely a function of the kind of monitor you have: 256, 16-bit, or 24-bit color. Some applications, such as KAI'S POWER GOO Software, do not support 256-color video display. The human eye can distinguish between 12 and 13 million colors. Typical photographs contain information equal to millions of colors. Computer monitors are usually capable of displaying either 256, thousands, or millions of colors. Special cards that you can insert into the computer can even allow the display of 16.8 million colors.

In the past, many color video monitors for IBM or compatible computers for the home were sold with just 256-color capability. However, most of today's home computers come with far more video memory (VRAM) installed on the video card inside the computer.

In most cases, 16-bit capability is sufficient for excellent display of photographic pictures on your computer. However, if your computer is equipped with high powered video display cards but still is not be able to show the millions of colors possible from a digitized print, make sure that the display setup and software installation have been done properly. See your video display card manual for details.

  10. When I boot up my computer my monitor is all out of sync. Why?
This is not a boot problem. When you use MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! for the first time and the display on your monitor is set for 256 colors, PICTURE IT! displays a message that states "display is not optimized." It offers an option to change the display settings to 16 bit color and 800 x 600 resolution. If you select this option, the monitor could be out of sync the next time the computer is booted. Either the monitor can't handle the setting, or there isn't enough video memory (VRAM).

To get your monitor back in sync, do the following:

    1. Boot your computer using the "safe mode", that is,
      • Shut down your computer
      • Turn your computer back on
      • At the message "Starting MS WINDOWS 95..." press F5.
    2. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.
    3. The Control Panel Window appears. Double-click on the Display icon.
    4. In the Display Properties window, click on the Settings tab.
    5. Use the pull-down menu to change the Color Palette back to 256 colors.
    6. Use the slider to change the Desktop Area to 648 x 480.

Note: The next time you use PICTURE IT! you see the option to optimize the display. Choose NO. The PICTURE IT! display is not optimized, but the images that you e-mail or print are of good quality.

  11. I scanned black-and-white images into MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! and the results were distorted. Why?
You may have started PICTURE IT! Software as a stand- alone application and then selected 'Get Images' from the PhotoDoc scanner, choosing black-and-white scans. When the scan was transferred to the PICTURE IT! application, the image was garbled, although grayscale and color scans were fine. The solution is to scan black-and-white images into the PICTURE IT! application by using the Launcher's PICTURE IT! icon, and your black-and-white scans transfer correctly.

  12. Why does the image always come up in MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! when I try to open the image file from WINDOWS EXPLORER?
When you installed PICTURE IT! Software, you probably selected the option to make the PICTURE IT! application the standard (primary) imaging application for opening all image files. To change this, un-install the PICTURE IT! Software and then re-install it. Be sure to click "No" when you see this prompt: "Would you like to use PICTURE IT! as the standard program for working with all pictures?"

  13. Why is the lamp on after I reboot or power down my computer?
Some computers do not send a strong enough signal to the parallel port to reset the scanner, or it could be that you didn't wait 15 minutes after you finished scanning before turning off your computer. If this happens, unplug the power supply either from the back of the scanner or from your electrical outlet, then plug in the scanner again, and reboot your computer.

  14. Why doesn't my scanner lamp turn off unless I unplug the scanner?
The scanner lamp may not turn off if the file PD11bkgd.exe is not running in the background or if there is a scanner communication error. Try one or more of the following steps:
    1. Check to see if the PD11bkgd is running in the background (press Ctrl-Alt-Del)
    2. If it is not running, add a PD11bkgd.exe shortcut to the WINDOWS Startup folder (the pd11bkgd.exe file should be in the c:\windows folder)
    3. If it is running, run the Troubleshooter. If scanner communications fail, do the following:
      1. Un-install the PhotoDoc Software.
      2. Re-install PhotoDoc Software
      3. Upgrade to PhotoDoc Version 1.5
      4. Set the parallel port mode to EPP. The parallel port address should be 0378 h
      5. Install a second parallel port card.
      6. Check to see if you have a defective scanner cable or scanner

  15. Why are my scanned pictures streaky?
Sometimes pictures appear streaky on your monitor but print just fine on an inkjet printer. This is because monitors have a lower resolution than inkjet printers. If your pictures have streaks that run in the same direction as the scan path, run the Troubleshooter Software and recalibrate your scanner.

The problem could also be the result of paper shavings or dirt. Follow the cleaning directions in the PhotoDoc Color Scanner User's Guide.

  16. Why doesn't the photo (or document) feed when I select scan?
It may need a little help getting started. Try gently pushing the picture (or document) into the feeder. If you still have a problem, open the scanner's access door to see if the roller is moving. If feeding problems continue, run the Troubleshooter Software to check the scanner's operation further. Clean the picker roller by following the directions in the PhotoDoc Color Scanner User's Guide.

  17. Why does my system lock-up when I try to scan an image into my PHOTOENHANCER application?
The PICTURE WORKS PHOTOENHANCER application has a maximum file size limit of 4K by 4K. If you try to scan in a file larger than this, the system appears to lock-up when the scanning is complete and the file transfer starts. What really happens is that PHOTOENHANCER Software puts up an error message about the file size limitation, but the error message window is behind the PhotoDoc Twain window. You have to check the WINDOWS 95 Task Bar for a PhotoDoc icon in order to bring up the error message.

  18. Why can't I select a resolution higher then 300 dpi; the product information states an enhanced resolution of 1200?
Most likely you are using the Step-by-Step option to scan which only provides three resolution settings. To select a higher resolution than 300 dpi, scan using the Expert option.

  19. Why do I have difficulty printing?
Because the pass-through port must have power in order for your printer to work, make sure that the power supply is connected to the scanner and that it is plugged into an electrical outlet.

  20. After I make a print, I can't scan because of a scanner communication error. If I turn off my computer, turn it back on, and then reboot, the scanner works until I make another print. This is a nuisance. What can I do?
The printer's driver (a small program that runs hidden to the user) may have a print monitor function. The print monitor is dormant until you activate the printer and then remains active until you either close out the print monitor or reboot your system. There is no quick workaround for this problem other than to disable the print monitor feature or possibly install a second parallel card into your computer and attach the scanner to second parallel port.

  21. Why won't my scanner scan when it is connected to my computer's parallel port?
Your printer may take exclusive control of the parallel port thus preventing any other application, such as your scanner, from using the port. Refer to the Readme file located on the scanner's installation CD for a list of printers and other parallel devices that we have determined cause conflicts with our scanner.

Any scanner or printer conflict can be resolved by installing a second parallel card into your computer and attaching the scanner to the second parallel port.

  22. Why do I get an error when I try to send an image via e-mail to a friend?
Some Internet service providers limit the size of the file that you can send through their service. Check to make sure that you scanned the image at 72 dpi resolution. If you still cannot send the image, contact your Internet service provider to determine if your Internet access account has a file size limit.

  23. What if I have KODAK Picture Postcard Software and my mother doesn't? Can I send her a Picture Postcard?
Yes, you can send her a Picture Postcard, but she won't be able to read it until she has downloaded Picture Postcard Viewer from the Picture Postcard Web site and installed it on her system. (The Picture Postcard Viewer is also available on the CD ROM for the PhotoDoc Scanner.) In your message, you should include instructions on how to do that. Feel free to cut and paste the following text:

    Dear Mom,

Attached to this message is a postcard you can open using KODAK Picture Postcard Viewer Software. In case you do not have this program, you can download it from the following Kodak Web site:

    http://www.kodak.com/go/postcardviewer

Then install the Viewer Software on your computer and enjoy!

  24. If I have a question about Picture Postcard Software, where can I get an answer?
Most of your questions can be answered by reviewing the Picture Postcard FAQs at the following Kodak Web site:

    http://www.kodak.com/US/en/digital/postcard/pictPostSupport.shtml.

  25. How do I completely Un-install PhotoDoc Software and all of it's associated files?
Warning: Following this procedure deletes all scanned files stored in either the KODAK PhotoDoc or Oplimit folders. Move these files to a temporary folder before proceeding. You can restore them to their original location after you have reinstalled the PhotoDoc Software.

In order to completely Un-install PhotoDoc Software, follow these steps:

    1. Select Start> Programs> KODAK PhotoDoc > Un-install All PhotoDoc Files.
    2. Select Start> Programs > CAERE Applications > Un-install OMNIPAGE Limited Edition to Un-install the CAERE OMNIPAGE LE Software.
    3. Turn off the PhotoDoc background driver. To do this, press Ctrl-Alt- Del, highlight the PD11bkgd entry and then select 'End Task.'
    4. Open WINDOWS Explorer and delete the following yellow folders:
      • C:\Oplimit
      • C:\Program Files\KODAK PhotoDoc
      • C:\Windows\Twain_32\PhotoDoc (if present; un-installing the PhotoDoc Software usually removes this folder)
    5. From the C:\Windows directory in WINDOWS Explorer, delete the following files

Appendix A - Modifying Computer Files and Closing Background Applications - WINDOWS 95 System

  1. Appendix A - Introduction
Application programs and device drivers can start up at boot-up and run in the background without the computer user's knowledge. Some of these programs or device drivers running in the background can interfere with the installation of software and should be closed down before software installation begins. You can start these application programs and device drivers from either line entries in the Win.ini file or from the Startup folder.

The following procedures helps you prevent these applications or drivers from starting at boot-up, and close down any item that started through the Startup folder. Usually you can use the Close Program window to close applications that start at boot-up by the Startup folder. However, you must edit the Win.ini file to prevent the applications started by the Win.ini entries from starting. We recommend that you prevent the Win.ini entries from loading first, then close down the remaining items.

When editing a configuration file to prevent a device driver from being started, we put a semi-colon (;) to the left of that statement in the file. This semi-colon is referred to as "remarking" (commenting) out the entry. Basically what happens is the computer "sees" the semicolon and ignores everything on the line to the right of it.

  2. Before Editing a Configuration (.ini) File
Making incorrect changes to any configuration (.ini) file can cause that application to function incorrectly. Making an improper change to the system.ini or win.ini can cause fatal errors, which could prevent your system from booting up. Therefore, it is important to make a backup copy of the file before you attempt to make any changes. If you are not comfortable with editing files, consult a computer expert for assistance.

  3. Making a Backup Copy
In the following examples we are using the win.ini file. If you are backing up some other file, substitute its name where 'win' appears in this example.
    1. Go to the MS-DOS prompt, Start > Programs > MS-DOS Prompt
    2. At the C:\> prompt, type: cd windows and press Enter.
    3. At the C:\Windows > prompt type: copy win.ini win.kod and press Enter. (In this example, we made a backup of the win.ini file and called it a .kod file.)
    4. Type: exit and press Enter to return to Windows 95.

  4. Editing the win.ini File
In the following example we are using the win.ini file. If you are editing a different configuration file, substitute its name where win.ini appears.
    1. Make a backup copy of the win.ini file; refer to 'Making a Backup Copy.'
    2. From WINDOWS 95 Desktop select Start >Run > and type: notepad c:\windows\win.ini and click on OK.
    3. Locate the [windows] section of the win.ini file.
    4. Type a semi-colon (; ) to the left of the lines that start with load= or run=
      Examples:
      Before
      [windows]
      load= C:\afterdrk\adk30.exe
      run=LXDBOXCP.EXE
      NullPort=None
      ScreenSaveActive=1
      device=HP Laserjet 4 Plus,HPPCL5MS,LPT1:
      After
      [windows]
      ; load= C:\afterdrk\adk30.exe
      ; run=LXDBOXCP.EXE
      NullPort=None
      ScreenSaveActive=1
      device=HP Laserjet 4 Plus,HPPCL5MS,LPT1:
NOTE: One or both of the lines may be blank after the equal (=) sign; if so, you do not need to remark out that statement. If you feel that you have done something incorrectly, exit immediately without saving the changes.
    5. Select File > Save
    6. Select File > Exit
    7. To make these changes effective, you have to re-boot your computer.
    8. Exit from the WINDOWS 95 Desktop, Select Start > Shutdown > Restart the Computer?
    9. Proceed to 'Closing Down the Background Applications.'

  5. Closing Down the Background Applications
    1. From the WINDOWS 95 Desktop press the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys at the same time to open the Close Program window.
    2. Highlight the desired item and select 'End Task.'
    3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until everything but the Explorer entry is closed down.
    4. A second window may appear stating that a program is not responding, etc. Go ahead and select 'End Task' on this window also.
    5. If closing out a particular entry causes your computer to shutdown and re-boot itself, leave that item running the next time.

  6. Re-Starting the Background Applications or Device Drivers
After installing the software and checking it out successfully, do the following to return your system to its normal state:
    1. Edit the win.ini file and remove any semi-colons (;) placed to the left of the Load= or Run= statements.
    2. Shutdown and re-boot your computer.

Appendix B - How to Remark Out the Chipio.386 Statement

  1. Introduction
The chipio.386 driver increases the speed for things to happen, such as the TWAIN, and if your system has lost functionality such as the mouse, sound, CD-ROM, or your computer just won't reboot, it could be caused by a memory conflict between the chipio.386 driver that is installed with the PhotoDoc Software and a system driver on your hard drive. It may be loading into memory space that is already occupied, or possibly it is preventing a system driver from loading into the memory allocation it requires. You do not need this driver in order to operate the PhotoDoc scanner, and the scanner maintains full features and functionality without it.

The chipio.386 statement is located in the system.ini folder. You must edit the system.ini file to prevent this driver from starting. Use the following procedures to remark out the chipio.386 statement.

  3. Procedure to Remark out the Chipio.386 Statement
    1. Make a backup copy of the system.ini file.
      • Go to the MS-DOS prompt, Start > Programs > MS-DOS Prompt
      • At the C:\> prompt, type: cd windows and press Enter.
      • At the C:\Windows > prompt type: copy system.ini system.kod and press Enter. (In this example, we made a backup of the system.ini file and called it a .kod file.)
      • Type: exit and press Enter to return to WINDOWS 95 Software.
    2. From the WINDOWS 95 desktop, select > Star > Run >and type: notepad c:\windows\system.ini and click on OK.
    3. Locate the [386Enh] section of the system.ini file.
    4. type a semi-colon (; ) to the left of the line that reads: Device:C:\windows\system\chipio.386
    5. Examples:
      Before
      [386Enh]
      device =*vshare
      device =*dynapage
