Difference Between Standard and High Grade Tape

What is the difference between a Standard Grade and a High Grade tape ?
Unfortunately, the video tape industry has no set specification limits that describe minimum requirements between grades of video tape. The only uniform standard is that of the licensing authority for VHS, and that essentially describes only the minimum performance requirements necessary for the product to be licensed to bear the VHS logo. This level of performance can carry any name the manufacturer desires... from none at all to whatever superlatives they can think of. Therefore, it is important to consider the reputation of the company whose name is on the product. At Kodak we have a reputation for quality and credibility so you can have confidence that the products we sell meet our own rigorous standards for High Grade and Extra High Grade.

Standard Grade tape is expected to perform similarly to the industry accepted standard reference (within a tolerance range). This is anaverage performing product and generally can be expected to provide a fairly good image quality with a modicum of dropouts.

High Grade tape can be expected to have less video and color noise, and fewer dropouts than a Standard Grade product, and there should also be a certainty that this is a durable, robust product that will provide along usable life.

Extra High Grade tape should provide the sharpest, clearest, and most accurate recording. It should provide better performance than the lower tape grades, especially in the more challenging tasks of extended play recording and multiple generation copies. Low dropout count and low noise are particularly critical parameters under these conditions. Extra High Grade tapes should also meet the highest durability and longevity standards to protect those special recordings.
