Installing a New Version of Kodak Professional Digital Print Production Software (DP2) on a Windows 2000 and Windows NT Operating System

Updated 24 September 2002

Note: This applies to Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT operating systems only.

Items to Review

Check the following items before you install or upgrade to the next version of DP2 software.

  • Have you archived your database?

You should archive on a daily basis. It only takes a few minutes and assures your information will be available when you need it. Archive from within the DP2 software application. Never neglect this critical operation.

  • Never move, delete, or edit the KPDP2 Directory on the server.

If you move this folder, the DP2 software will not find image paths, folders, and artwork it uses in its application. If you delete this folder or parts of its contents, hard data is also lost.

Important: If you are using MSDE and you move the dp2.mdf file by moving the KPDP2 directory, it can require up to 24 hours to re-establish your system.

  • Are you removing the current version of DP2 software?

If you must remove the current version of DP2 software, use the operating system uninstaller. After you complete the uninstall, you will see a KPDP2 directory with items inside it. This is normal. The uninstaller only removes what was originally placed on the system. Any files or directories that were created or modified will remain.

  • Are you upgrading software?

Most new software versions require the creation of a new database table. You may want to do a database backup. The database tables always change and the mdf or mdb files are no longer usable. If you archive your database, the data will repopulate the new table structures when the new version of DP2 software is installed.

Warning: Do not indiscriminately rename your server. You will lose paths to many of the important items listed in item 2 above. Contact your authorized Kodak Service Representative before renaming your server. There is no automated way of redirecting the old paths to the new server name and saved data. The process of redirecting the paths will require a significant amount of time. If a person at your facility understands Structured Query Language (SQL; the language used to request information from a database), that person may be able to make the path changes.

  • Install the Service and Assembly Module (SAM).

Install the SAM that is on your Kodak Professional HR Film Scanner CD. SAM detects problems and allows communication with the film scanner. It is best to have SAM installed first because it can report different problems regarding the dll (dynamic link libraries) and aspi (advanced SCSI programming interface) layers in the machine.

  • Verify the HR Film Scanner is working properly.

After installing SAM, verify that the scanner works properly. Upgrade to any new firmware versions.

  • Verify the HR Film Scanner works with SAM.

First verify that the scanner works with SAM, then install the new DP2 software. Using this sequence helps verify if potential problems reside with the software or with SAM.

See information on printer or scanner problems after installing a new version of DP2 software.

  • Change database managers.

If you archive, changing database managers is easy. The database table information imports seamlessly into either JET or MSDE.

Important: If you are using MSDE, do not copy or move the dp2.mdf file.

  • The shared database location must be in the same directory as the DP2 software.
