Button Cell Batteries

Historically, certain button cell batteries contained trace amounts of intentionally added mercury to suppress the generation of internal gases, which could otherwise leak or rupture the battery. Beginning in June 2011 Kodak has only sold mercury free alkaline manganese or silver oxide button cell batteries.

Most households can simply discard spent button cell batteries through the local municipal solid waste program. Collection and recycling programs are difficult to implement, and with the exception of silver oxide button cell batteries, yield little or no economic value. During the routine servicing of watches and other electronic devices, some jewelers may collect silver oxide batteries for their silver content. Otherwise, few button cell batteries are recycled.

Important Caution about Battery Collection Programs.
Anyone intending to collect button cell batteries, coin cells or other miniature batteries should take precautions to avoid unintentional ingestion of the batteries, and to provide proper care if ingestion does occur. For further information see: Swallowed a Button Battery?
