Director Rafael Fernandez and cinematographer Matt Uhry recently teamed up for a spot for the Mississippi Board of Health.

Produced by Palomar Pictures, the commercial depicts an uncomfortable visit to the dentist by a young girl. The tongue-in-cheek visual style features mostly stationary shots, deliberate editing, and a cool color palette.

Prior to shooting, Fernandez and Uhry loaded storyboards into a computer editing program and created an animatic to establish pacing and a shot list. The spot was filmed at Sunset Stages in Los Angeles on a three-wall set. Uhry gave the room a base exposure with two Image 80 fixtures overhead, skirted to keep light off the walls. They were fitted with a mix of daylight and tungsten-balanced tubes. "That gave us a slightly disturbed and dirty light, which was the feeling we wanted," says Uhry.
