Making short-form television drama that will also be
released in the VCD or DVD format is a new trend emerging in
Thailand and one that is likely to lead to more projects
being originated on film for reasons of quality.

A recent example of a short-form
television drama is the mini-series
The Hospital, which is
billed as a ghost story with a
twist by production company Yoho Film.
“The Hospital is a complex mixture of
imagination versus reality. It is about a
group of people who are sent to a
hospital after an accident, only to meet up
with already-dead patients begging for
their help,” explained seasoned director
Bandit Thongdee, who is well known for
his many works in the ghost genre in Thai
cinemas. “A hospital has a scary
connotation to it. It is a sometimes dark
and dreary place where people come to
die or are dying.
“When Director of Photography
Sittipong Kongthong and I set out to do
this project, our objective was to create
suspense and fear in the audience, but in
a subtle way in terms of story telling. The
only way we could achieve this was by
using Kodak film. Film provided the
realism we wanted, so we could be as
delicate as we could. We needed film’s
depth of field in certain crucial scenes to
excite the interest of the audience, as we
will be using very little special effects
when compared to other horror films.”
