Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

The restoration of the classic 1939 Walt Disney animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first project handled by Cinesite when the Kodak subsidiary opened for business in 1992. More than a million frames of the film were scanned into digital format. Digital artists repaired scratches on the original animation cells and fading of dyes on the intermediate film, while removing dirt and repairing other anomalies. All of this work was accomplished under the guidance of Disney's Harrison Ellenshaw and several of the original animators to ensure that the artistic integrity of the original film was retained.

It was an ambitious, labor-intensive and time-consuming process, and the beginning of a convergence of film and digital technologies as a vital tool for restoring and preserving the legacy of irreplaceable motion pictures. Cinesite has subsequently played a role in the restoration of many classic films, including such recent projects as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and To Hell and Back. Read More
