Sex and the City bids adieu

And so a last farewell

Sex and the City is one of those rare television series that has become a cultural touchstone. After a successful six-year run, the final episode ran on Home Box Office in February. Over the past five seasons, cinematographer John Thomas has crafted the program's signature elegant and glamorous look, in conjunction with production designer Jeremy Conway and costume designer Patricia Field, along with a series of cinematographers who traded off episodes. Typically, while one cinematographer was shooting two episodes, the other was prepping the next two with a different director.

The program has been photographed in Super 16mm format from the beginning. "When our show was conceived, the smaller, lighter 16mm cameras made sense for running around and grabbing scenes in a mostly location show," says Thomas. "Since we're a 16mm show, we tend to adequately expose the slower films and keep filtration to a minimum." Read More
