Cinematographer Tony Imi, BSC, is a veteran of his craft. During a career that has spanned four decades, he has worked on projects as varied as The Slipper and the Rose (1976), Aimée and Jaguar (1999) and Enemy Mine (1985). His latest project is British comedy School for Seduction, about an Italian temptress arriving in a Newcastle school to teach the pupils about the art of romance, which required Imi to contend with a variety of challenging interior and exterior set-ups.

"I was trying not to make the council estates and the backstreets of Newcastle look too grim and hard," he says, "so I decided to shoot with the lower contrast stocks of (Kodak Vision 320T) 5277 and (Kodak Vision Expression 500T) 5284. I normally use (Kodak Vision 200T) 5274 as a standard measure for all stocks, and against this, the stocks I chose with their exceptional latitude and tonal range give the director of photography a choice in making the scenes either pastel looking or hard edged," he explains. Imi knows from experience that these particular stocks open up a variety of options. "The Kodak Vision Expression 500T 5284 was chosen for night exterior work. Many night exterior scenes were shot under available light conditions with minimal fill light and this stock gave a very rich look with great detail in the shadow areas. They were both great tools for the job and both stocks performed beautifully," he comments. Read More
