New World is a black-and-white short movie designed to demonstrate the capabilities of two new stocks – Kodak Tri-X reversal film 7266 and Kodak Plus-X reversal film 7265. These improved black-and-white films were introduced in 2003, accompanied by an updated lab process that is more effi cient and more environmentally friendly.
Great deals of Kodak Plus-X (ASA 100) and Kodak Tri-X (ASA 200) films are shot by film students. The narrow latitude of the reversal films allows teachers to better evaluate student work, and reversal films do not require an intermediate or print film step.
Director of photography Mark Raker, a cinematography instructor at the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies for the past 18 years, decided that the best way to test the new films was to make a movie using equipment, techniques and situations typically available to film students.
