High Maintenance by Philip Van
Synopsis: Jane is unhappy with her dull husband and monotonou s marriage. Thankfully, in the near-future unhappiness can be made a thing of the past and upgrades are always available.
High Maintenance was an opportunity for me to tell a small personal story about the power struggle in romantic relationships through the context of the very large, high-concept conventions of the sci-fi genre.
The film is ultimately a hybrid that aims to spin both the romantic drama and sci-fi genres on their heads by plotting them strategically against each other.
My consummate aim is to make films that I would love to see. I am attracted to both personal films centered on interesting or obsessive characters as well as economical narratives that work hard at the art of the subtle reveal. This was my way of
combining both.
