Kodak Film Processing Station puts creativity in consumers' hands
From the KODAK Create-a-Print 35mm enlargement center of 1988 to today's KODAK Film Processing Station, Kodak has pioneered the era of walk-up, do-it-yourself creativity for consumers' film pictures.
Early versions of this technology enabled consumers to enhance, zoom, crop and print enlargements from developed negatives, then from scans of pre-existing pictures. The Film Processing Station takes this science to a new level. Now, consumers can load their film, have it automatically processed, review and select images for enhancements and enlargements, print their pictures, and receive a KODAK Picture CD with the digitized images.
Throughout the evolution of picture kiosks, Kodak has focused on helping consumers do more with their pictures. Simple functions - zooming, cropping, and rotating pictures to improve their composition - were soon followed by the ability to add text and borders, correct color, and select multiple print formats, such as 5x7-, 8x10-inch, and wallet-sized prints.
While retaining all the creative capabilities of its predecessors, the newest Picture Maker G3 and FPS respond to a common consumer desire: the ability to "see inside" their roll of film, and select the photos to enhance, print and enlarge before they're printed.
Thus, the Picture Maker G3 offers one-stop processing, previewing, enhancement, and printing functions in as little as seven minutes. Instead of film negatives, consumers receive their pictures as high-resolution image files on a KODAK Picture CD that can be easily emailed, stored and retrieved for future usage.
While initial FPS installations will be configured for rolls of 35mm film, users of one-time-use cameras will need to ask a store associate to remove the 35mm film from the camera. Plans are underway to add a device so consumers can safely open a one-time-use camera and remove the film cassette themselves.
One additional benefit to consumers and retailers: the familiarity of 35mm film. Even with growing use of digital cameras, many consumers are comfortable with their film cameras and have made significant investments in cameras, lenses, and accessories that work with film technologies. The Film Processing Station gives those consumers who prefer film the benefits of digital.
Film is a very big part of the overall market today, and Kodak continues to selectively invest in film technologies that support its digital strategy. The Film Processing Station is one example. Research shows that consumers who can preview and select the pictures they want to print actually spend more on their order.
And, the Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA) agrees on the technology's impact. It recently named the KODAK Picture Maker G3 kiosk and Film Processing Station a DIMA Innovative Digital Product Award winner at the 2004 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Annual International Convention. DIMA recognized the KODAK Picture Maker G3 kiosk as one of 10 products, out of hundreds of digital products on display, for its influence on the future of digital imaging. Additionally, the Kodak Film Processing Station won the Product Innovation Award from Best Magazine at the Digital Focus event during the Photo Marketing Association show in Las Vegas this month.
