Telling the Story

When selecting pictures for your collage, look for pictures that help to tell the story. Design your collage to fit on a small screen (800 x 600 pixels or less). Choose a background that suits the story you're telling.

Pay attention to the visual composition of your collage. Try to position elements so they draw the eye through the picture in a way that somehow relates to the story. For instance, the picture of the guard below was flopped to have him look into the collage. Try "cutting out" the subjects of some pictures from their backgrounds -- this adds variety to the composition.

London Guard

Tom's Process:
From here I think of a background. White is easy but you can be more creative than that -- can't you? Some of my backgrounds have included:
  • A flag of a country
  • A solid color relating to the event (red for Christmas, cold blue for winter, etc)
  • A gradient that starts with one color on one side (or corner) and fades into another at the opposite.
  • Use the "eye dropper" to sample a color from a photo and use it for the background. Note that in this collage, I picked the color from the guard's jacket. This makes it tie together nicely.
You don't want to go overboard, it is after all the background.

Harrods

Again, Tom cut out the background of Harrods to make it appear more dramatic and appealing.
