Tom's Process:
I usually work in a higher resolution mode (300 dpi) so I can get a decent print. However, when I email the collage I change the resolution to 72 dpi. This is screen resolution, and anything more would be overhead. Making the file svelte for its recipient is always proper email etiquette. (Visit the Digital Learning Center's Creating Digital Images chapter for more information.)

I almost always add a date to these -- after all, it is an important part of the story. At the very least I add a title. The type doesn't have to be big; the pictures will do the talking.

I use Adobe's PhotoShop but a number of low cost photo editing packages can be used to create the same end product. The features I use most often are; auto level adjust (some packages call this "by example"), brightness, contrast, feather edges, type tool, cropping, moving, fill and blur.

I hope my tips prove useful to you -- and don't forget to have fun! I would be happy to hear from you -- send me YOUR collage (tom@kodak.com).
