I like to shoot close-ups when I'm covering a sporting event. For this
close-up of a woodcutter's hands, I used a wide-angle lens and small f-stops.
This combination produced good depth of field, unlike a macro lens, which, at
any aperture, offers much less depth of field.

I used a flash with a diffuser to photograph these winners at the Great Outdoor Games. When the background is brighter than the subject, use a flash, and read your camera and flash manual to find out how to get good daylight fill-in flash pictures. Notice how the background light is balanced to the light from the flash.
