The park at the old Walled City in Kowloon is a prime example of modern Hong Kong's attempt to preserve its past while moving forward. The Walled City came into being in the 1860s after the British occupation and had once served as the headquarters for the Qing Imperial Guardsmen. Eventually the Brits negotiated with the Chinese to come in and clear out the inhabitants. In 1994, the city began to transform the Walled City into the historical park visitors enjoy today, where touchstones to
each of the different periods of history have
been carefully preserved.
