The roads are incredibly confusing in the city, so many visitors use public transportation. The subway carries over 2.2 million passengers a day, and connects the business and tourist centers of downtown with many of the outlying areas of the New Territories, as well as the airport on Lantau Island.

Star Ferry operates three major routes back and forth across Victoria Harbour connecting the districts that line the water on both the Hong Kong and Kowloon sides. Aside from being an integral part of commuter transportation services in the city, the ferries also offer one of the finest and most inexpensive ways to see views of the city. The bus system covers the center of town around Victoria Harbour as well as the outlying areas and the islands where motorized vehicles are allowed.
