The roads are incredibly confusing in the city, so many visitors use public transportation. The subway carries over 2.2 million passengers a day, and connects the business and tourist centers of downtown with many of the outlying areas of the New Territories, as well as the airport on Lantau Island. Star Ferry operates three major routes back and forth across Victoria Harbour connecting the districts that line the water on both the Hong Kong and Kowloon sides.
