Hong Kong consists of 18 districts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon (directly across the harbor), the New Territories (north of Kowloon), and some 260 tiny islands clustered in the South China Sea. Locals generally identify places as "on the Hong Kong side" or "on the Kowloon side" referring to the two sides of Victoria Harbour.

Still, directions can be challenging because district names, street names, and neighborhood names are often used interchangeably. For example, when looking for a restaurant you may be told: "It's on Nathan Road," or "Oh yes, it's in Mong Kok," or "Ah, one of my favorites, in Yau Tsim Mong." All three could be true! Having a map with the district names is a big help.
