The Southern District of Hong Kong Island makes a great day trip from the center of town. Stanley Market offers a shopping paradise of small boutiques with name brand fashions at discount prices, and the surrounding beaches are some of the cleanest on the island. The shops seem like little more than
t-shirt and souvenir shacks at first glance, but if you look closely, they carry some fine merchandise, at impressive prices. There is often live entertainment or music in the local beachfront pubs and arcades, and a number of fine eateries to round out a relaxing day at the seaside.

Murry House offers a great tale of home improvement. Built in 1870 as an army barracks in the center of town, it was dismantled in 1982, moved, and reassembled stone by stone at Stanley Market. It now houses a museum and several restaurants, and the individual
stones on the sea-facing side of the building still bare the
ID numbers that assured they were put back
in proper order!
