Easily accessible by ferry from the center of Hong Kong, Lamma Island is a local favorite for weekend getaways or midday escapes from the fast pace of the urban center. The island is only about thirty minutes by ferry, but feels worlds away. There are no cars, and aside from the occasional golf-cart sized work vehicle, people get around by foot or bicycle. For the outdoor enthusiast there are a number of hikes, from leisurely strolls to day excursions.

Seafood restaurants abound in the developed fishing villages. But the real joy of the place is taking long walks through undeveloped greenery. Ginger flowers and jasmine grow wild, exotic birds call out from the treetops, and from June to October you can even see Green Sea Turtles on Sham Wan Beach. If you find yourself in one of the older, quieter beachside snack shops, try asking for "tofufa." It is a delicious dessert of custard-like bean curd,
sweetened with ginger syrup.
