In Kodak’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, the making of color negative motion picture film begins with the creation of a tough, transparent and flexible film base. Its primary ingredient is cellulose acetate, a versatile chemical also used in making textiles. The base must be uniformly thick and consistently durable. Even the tiniest defect can make the film base tear or bind as it whirls through a camera. The film base gets its first spin on a highly polished drum. It’s not film yet, but it’s on its way.
