The diversity and quality of the entries surprised the judges. John Harte "found the entries that focused on social or cultural issues to be the most moving. There are a lot of talented kids out there." Casey Christie sums up Five Faces of Kern as "a very successful attempt to get 'at risk' students involved and interested in photography and competition. It was great to see so many people work together to encourage students and allow them to show their talents."
