Janusz Kaminski
Janusz Kaminski, ASC (American Society of Cinematographers), won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Schindler's List. Additionally, Kaminski was nominated for an Academy Award last year for Amistad. His other credits include Jerry Maguire, Little Giants, How to Make an American Quilt, Tall Tale and The Lost World. The cinematographer is currently completing postproduction on his directorial debut, Lost Souls.

Director Steven Spielberg describes how he and Kaminski established the "look" of Saving Private Ryan: "To present war as 'up close and personal' as we possibly could, we really deglamorized the technology we were using. The images we got involved a combination of several elements — film stock, processing, and a deconstruction of the slickness that you usually get with modern lenses. It was Janusz's idea to strip the lenses, flash the film (to alter contrast) and use ENR (a special processing technique); it was my decision to desaturate the colors. I came up with that notion while watching the color 16mm Signal Corps footage that (director) George Stevens had done during the invasion of France." Most of Saving Private Ryan was shot on Eastman EXR 5293 film.
