Remi Adefarasin
Remi Adefarasin, BSC (British Society of Cinematographers), like many British cameramen, began his career working for the BBC. His projects there included the miniseries Christabel and the TV film Memento Mori. His other credits include the feature films Sliding Doors; Captives; Truly, Madly, Deeply; Hollow Reed; and The Hummingbird Tree. Adefarasin recently completed shooting the features Eugene Onegin and The Arabian Nights.

Elizabeth has a generally dark look, offset by areas of brightness. Adefarasin says that he used Kodak Vision 500T 5279 film because its latitude "makes images of this period look more real. You can overexpose certain areas and still hold detail. It's grainy but it has a quality that isn't as crystal clear as the slower emulsions."

To add texture to the shadowy lighting, Adefarasin "tried to find any reason to shoot through glass, sheer nets, fabrics, flames or anything bizarre. This gives a slightly different impression that defracts the image so it's not crystal clear. When you see an image that it is too well-defined, your brain stops you from looking at it — whereas you become more interested if the image is held back a bit."
