Kodak was among the photographers at Churchill Downs this year, capturing some of the special sights of the 125th running of the Kentucky Derby. Our photographer was armed with a KODAK DC265 Zoom Digital Camera and his mission was to capture the faces and fashion of the event. We sent pictures to AOL's Entertainment Asylum Scrapbook via the Internet, where they created picture albums for the world to see.

Fast processing speed, 3x optical zoom, and high resolution (1.6 million pixels) were key advantages in the choice of the DC265 for shooting the Derby visitors. Additional advantages came in the form of extra KODAK Picture Cards for extended memory and in the use of NiMH Rechargeable batteries, which powered the camera all day, and simply required a recharge to be ready for another day of shooting. Actual race photos were left to the photojournalists with their extreme telephoto lenses -- many of which were mounted on the KODAK PROFESSIONAL DCS Digital Cameras!

How it worked
Our process was simply to shoot at the events, then retire to a hotel room at the end of the day to sort and edit the pictures. We had fast access to the pictures by using a PCMCIA Adapter to connect the COMPACTFLASH memory cards directly to a laptop computer. The pictures were already in JPEG format, so viewing and sorting was fast and easy. We selected the best shots and then sent them in JPEG format as email attachments to the AOL Entertainment Asylum team along with captions. The AOL team created the picture galleries, doing some additional image cropping and caption editing.

[Three Ladies with Derby Hats]
Ladies in the Clubhouse

One of the most alluring sights of the Derby Weekend was the parade of hats and beautiful outfits. Women and men alike were dressed in celebration of the event. The hats were doing their job well--shading the faces of the people--which created a photo challenge in itself. Fill-in flash was a handy option for lightening hat-shaded faces and capturing the bright smiles that were so abundant at the Derby.

From the crowded and picnic party atmosphere of the Infield to the formal and elegant dining rooms of the clubhouse, visitors were enjoying their special day. Some were first timers, some were repeating, some were "lucky," some weren't. But all were having a great time!
