The pictures in the DC290 Quality Comparison Series were shot at each of the three compression settings available on the DC290, for standard, medium, high, and ultra resolution, for a total of twelve combinations. The DC290 also takes pictures in the uncompressed TIFF format, for those times when you need perfect quality. Click the following links to download these images for viewing or printing:

Resolution settings vary the number of pixels used to create the image.
  • Higher resolution provides more detail and better print quality.
  • Lower resolution provides more picture capacity on the memory card, but sacrifices some detail.
Quality settings vary the amount of JPEG compression applied to the picture.
  • The advantage of less compression is that it provides the best picture quality.
  • The advantage of more compression is smaller file size*, enabling you to fit more pictures on your camera's COMPACTFLASH memory card. But the higher compression settings sacrifice some picture quality.

To see how many pictures the DC290 can hold at various quality and resolution settings, visit the File Size and Card Capacity Figures page.

We've carefully chosen the various quality settings on the DC290 Zoom camera to give users a wide range of flexibility when making quality vs. file size decisions, but to also insure that results will be acceptable at all settings. The pictures below are cropped without modification from the original camera files. The differences between the quality settings are subtle.

We encourage you to interpret the differences between the original pictures in the way that is most meaningful to you. Download the original files and evaluate them by using them in the way you typically use digital pictures (e.g., print them, install them as wallpaper, etc.).

DC290 Resolution Settings
Standard
720 x 480
This resolution is good for web based images, e-mail and smaller prints. An advantage with standard resolution is that you can fit more pictures on your memory card.
Medium
1440x960
This resolution provides a balance between image detail and COMPACTFLASH memory card capacity.
High
1792x1200
The high resolution setting gives you enough detail for dazzling, photo-realistic
5" x 7" prints.
Ultra
2240x1500
Consider using this mode when printing pictures greater than 5"x 7" at 300 DPI. The picture resolution is interpolated to 3.1 in the camera using the raw CCD data and Kodak's color science. After this is done the printer will not have to "re-interpolate" the picture as much when printing out at larger sizes.
DC290 Compression Settings
Good This setting applies the most compression to your pictures. Use it when you want to fit the greatest number of pictures on your memory card.
Better This setting provides a moderate amount of JPEG compression. Use it when you need a balance between print quality and COMPACTFLASH memory card capacity.
Best This setting uses a minimal level of compression, and results in the best quality pictures. Use it for best quality, and when picture capacity is not an issue.
Uncompressed This setting creates a totally uncompressed TIFF file. The size of this file is signifigantly larger than all of the other files. This should only be used with larger picture cards.
* File size of camera originals will vary based on the subject matter as well as the resolution and quality settings on the camera. JPEG compression ratios are impacted by the amount of detail in a scene--for example, highly detailed scenes will compress less than smooth, plain scenes.
