DC265 Quality (Compression) and Resolution Comparisons
The pictures in the DC265 Quality Comparison Series were shot
at each of the three quality settings available on the DC265, for
standard, medium and high resolution, for a total of nine combinations.
Resolution settings vary the number of pixels used to
create the image.
- Higher resolution provides more detail and better print quality.
- Lower resolution provides more picture capacity on the memory
card, but sacrifices some detail.
Quality settings vary the amount of JPEG compression applied
to the picture.
- The advantage of less compression is that it provides the best
picture quality.
- The advantage of more compression is smaller file size*, enabling
you to fit more pictures on your camera's COMPACTFLASH memory
card. But the higher compression settings sacrifice some picture
quality.
We've carefully chosen the various quality settings on the DC265
Zoom camera to give users a wide range of flexibility when making
quality vs. file size decisions, but to also insure that results
will be acceptable at all settings. The pictures below are cropped
without modification from the original camera files. The differences
between the quality settings are subtle.

|
We encourage you to interpret the differences between the original
pictures in the way that is most meaningful to you. Download the
original files and evaluate them by using them in the way you typically
use digital pictures (e.g., print them, install them as wallpaper,
etc.).
The pictures below are 100 x 100 pixel portions of the image at
left. The table shows the resolution and quality settings, as well
as the resulting approximate number of pictures that will fit on
the 16MB COMPACTFLASH card included with the DC265 Camera.

DC265 Resolution Settings |
Standard
768 x 512 |
This resolution is good for web based images,
e-mail and smaller prints. An advantage with standard resolution is
that you can fit more pictures on your memory card. |
Medium
1152 x 768 |
This resolution provides a balance between image
detail and COMPACTFLASH memory card capacity. |
High
1536 x 1024 |
The high resolution setting gives you enough detail
for exceptionally sharp, colorful 8" x 10" prints. |
|
DC265 Compression Settings |
| Good |
This setting applies the most compression to your
pictures. Use it when you want to fit the greatest number of pictures
on your memory card. |
| Better |
This setting provides a moderate amount of JPEG
compression. Use it when you need a balance between print quality
and COMPACTFLASH memory card capacity. |
| Best |
This setting uses a minimal level of compression,
and results in the best quality pictures. Use it for best quality,
and when picture capacity is not an issue. |
| * File size of camera originals will vary based
on the subject matter as well as the resolution and quality settings
on the camera. JPEG compression ratios are impacted by the amount
of detail in a scene--for example, highly detailed scenes will compress
less than smooth, plain scenes. |
