What are the differences between the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Film Scanner and the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Plus Film Scanner?
Speed
The RFS 3570 plus film scanner features a new light emitting diode (LED) light source that eliminates the need for a mechanical color wheel to allow for faster scans and lowers service costs. A newly designed motherboard exports 12-bit data directly to the host computer and image processing on the host computer takes advantage of today's faster computers. These improvements cut scanning times by up to seventy-five percent over the RFS 3570 film scanner.

Image Quality
The RFS 3570 plus film scanner's new imaging subsystem enhances scans by reducing flare and providing improved image quality, including better color, sharpness and saturation. This leads to a dynamic range of 3.5 which enables more consistent high quality scans at a lower price per image than the RFS 3570 film scanner and other competitive scanners.

Reliability
The RFS 3570 film scanner is well known for its reliability. In addition to providing more speed and better image quality, the RFS 3570 plus film scanner is even more reliable than its predecessor. With fewer parts and a newly designed motherboard and light source, this unit is three times more reliable than the RFS 3570 film scanner.

What are the main features of the scanner?
The RFS 3570 plus film scanner delivers the high-quality image, exceptional reliability and total productivity expected from a highly-rated scanner. This high-speed scanner combines 2K x 3K resolution with excellent dynamic range and sensitivity. Because the 12-bit per channel color scanner detects changes in lightness with 4x finer sensitivity than a 10-bit scanner, scans have true color fidelity and superb image detail from shadow to highlight.

RFS 3570 plus film scanner features include:

Improved User Interface
The RFS 3570 plus film scanner interface is intuitive, and easy to use which enables operators to quickly master the capabilities of the scanner.

Automation
The RFS 3570 plus film scanner features automatic color correction to ensure that first-time scans are color-balanced and have the correct density and contrast. Auto-focused lenses deliver exceptional image sharpness. Calibration is automatic and 50% faster than the RFS 3570 film scanner.

Versatility
The RFS 3570 plus film scanner scans color and black-and-white in 35 mm, 46 mm, 70 mm, and 120-format film positive or negative. Resolutions can be chosen from the software or entered as custom settings. Users can also create custom film terms for specific or unique shooting conditions.

Is the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Film Scanner upgradeable to the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Plus Film Scanner?
No, the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Film Scanner cannot be upgraded to a the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Plus Film Scanner.

Which computers can be used with the scanner?
The scanner can be used with any PC-compatible or Power Macintosh computer. A software CD is provided which includes the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Plus TWAIN Data Source, Version 1.0 / for WINDOWS for PCs and an ADOBE PHOTOSHOP Acquire Module for Macintosh.

Ensure 32-bit drivers that support Windows 95, 98, and Windows NT are installed. The latest drivers are available at Kodak ProfessionalRFS 3570 Plus Film Scanner Software. Be sure to read the system requirements before installing drivers.

What kind of light source is used in the scanner?
The scanner utilizes very stable LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology to provide the most consistent scan-to-scan image quality in the industry. Various combinations of R, G, and B diodes made it possible to remove the filter wheel and KODAK WRATTEN Filters used in previous RFS scanners. This dramatically improves scanning speeds and reliability.

What is the resolution of the scanner?
The resolution is stated as dpi (*dots per inch) as a percentage of total resolution, depending on film size. At 35 mm, the scanner can scan up top 1,000 dpi optical or 2,000 dpi dithered resolution. At 70 mm, the scanner can scan up to 400 dpi optical or 800 dpi dithered resolution. Dithering is a mechanism whereby the scanner mechanically moves the CCD so that each pixel on the CCD captures multiple information of the same area of the film or slide.
* Note: dpi and ppi can be used interchangeably.

What is the maximum dpi per film size?
At 100% resolution:
35 mm 2,150 dpi at
0 magnification
from -20 to +20
magnification
1,720 - 2,580
46 mm 1,291 dpi at
0 magnification
from -20 to +20
magnification
1,032 - 1,549
120 mm 910 dpi at
0 magnification
from -20 to +20
magnification
802 - 1,092
70 mm 802 dpi at
0 magnification
from -20 to +20
magnification
802 - 962

What is the color depth of a scanned image?
Color depth is the number of shades (variations) of colors that can be obtained from an image. The more shades of color the scanner captures, the truer to the original a reproduction of the scanned image will appear. When scanning an image, the pixel data (color depth) for each pixel is 24-bit (16 million color variations, 8-bit/color) for color, 12-bit or 8-bit (256 shades) for gray scale images (black-and-white photos). The "Black-and-White" resolution setting records the data as either black or white but still retains this information in a 24-bit format.

Why are there different choices of scanning resolutions, and which one should I use to scan my images?
Different choices for scanning resolutions are available so that you can tailor the scans to your needs. The resolution you chose depends on the output you choose. When scanning an image, the higher the resolution (at which you scan), the bigger the resultant image file will be.

The following table shows some scanning examples using different scanning detail (resolution) and color combinations, and the result of the scan.
Resolution Setting Resultant File Size
300 dpi 0.4 MB
500 dpi 1.1 MB
1000 dpi (50%) 4.5 MB
2000 dpi (100%) 18 MB

What are typical scan times for scanning an image? (Note: Scan times depend on CPU, times below based on 200 MHz Power Macintosh)
For 1,000 dpi (50% resolution), less than 10 seconds. For 2,000 dpi (full resolution), less than 30 seconds.

What software is included with the scanner?
The scanner includes an ADOBE PHOTOSHOP Acquire Module and KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Plus TWAIN Data Source, Version 1.0, enabling end users to scan directly into their computer's image-editing software.

What is the dynamic range of the scanner?
The scanner provides a high quality luminance density range of 3.5. This was determined using a KODAK Q-60 Color Input Target where it is possible to discern between gray scale steps having densities of 3.3 and 3.5.
